GLVC Women’s Soccer: Drury Panthers Shut out by NKU Norse

Despite Drury’s traditional high-pressure, the Norse maintained their composure and slowly began to take control midway through the 2nd half today. The Panthers seemed to lose their focus after some calls went against them and the Norse capitalized. The first serious threat came as Hk Jessie Sanderson had to make a diving save on a long shot by Amanda Mason headeddoe the upper 90. The breakthrough came in the 83rd minute from a throw-in deep in Panther’s territory. A flick-on header was converted and the Norse then held off the Panther’s final charge, including what would have been a goal except for a late offsides call (video) and then a goal line clearance by Elise Schmulling (video) on Mandi Little’s header that got past a charging goalkeeper.

From the NKU site – Amanda Mason’s (pictured, #4 in black) goal late in the second half gave the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory against Drury in a Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown Friday afternoon. Mason, a sophomore from Northwest High School in Cincinnati, snapped the scoreless contest at the 83:06 mark by finishing off a close-in shot for her sixth goal of the season. Norse goalie Rachael Wood collected the shutout and finished with seven saves as NKU won its seventh consecutive contest and improved to 12-2 overall, 9-2 in the GLVC.

The Norse entered today’s 11:00 am game with a six game winning streak, tied for first in the GLVC with Drury, Quincy, Bellarmine and Indianapolis, with 8-2 Conference records. Drury lost last week to Bellarmine, helping create the logjam at the top and only their 3rd loss this season.
