October 10, 2009 by Ole · 6 Comments
Clearing skies Friday night (red sky at night, sailor’s delight) and into Saturday led to highs in the mid-60’s and light breezes, leading to large crowds and excellent conditions for enjoying the games.

The Wildcats scored 4 minutes into the game Saturday evening but the Titan’s fought back to tie the game. The final minutes of regulation saw the Titan’s make a significant push to get the winner, with a direct kick that was just tipped over the crossbar by the Eureka keeper and a corner kick that had to be cleared by the defender on the back post. The game winner happened 6 min into OT by junior Jeff Wallner, who describes the action in this video.

A goal in the 4th minute by senior Ian Kennedy was all that was necessary for the Chief’s in this win against the new kids on the block who hoped to crash their party. It was a tight game, with both team creating opportunities as the Irish went back to their more traditional 4-4-2 formation in this game. Strong play by the Chief’s defense and some timely saves by keeper Tyler Moses allowed them to hoist the trophy.

Blue Springs Wildcats – 1
Much like the weather improved on the weekend, the Chief’s have slowly but steadily prepared themselves for the upcoming playoffs. Taking on the #10th ranked Blue Springs Wildcats in the second round, winner’s bracket game, it was again a close affair that could have gone either way. When it went to PK’s, goalie Tyler Moses was able to stop 3 of the spot kicks by the Wildcats, giving the Chiefs the win and the celebration.
Springfield Catholic – 1 (1st OT)
Glendale Falcons – 0
The Irish got the game-winner from sophomore Reid Harbach from a set piece. The ball was sent in from 30 yards to the penalty spot where it was initially pushed wide by the Falcon’s defense. Harbach won a 50/50 battle for the ball, broke towards goal and buried it into the roof of the net from just outside the 6 yard box as the defense and keeper collapsed on him. The goal came following regulation that saw the Irish play a very defensive 4-5-1 system that the Falcon’s attacked relentlessly but were unable to exploit.
