Missouri State Bears Soccer Report

The Lady Bear’s open MVC play today at Plaster, 1:00 2:00 pm start. I’m betting they handle the challenge much better than the football team did! The men play at Southern Methodist today.

Northern Iowa Panthers – 0
Freshman forward Becky Handley scored in the first minute of play to lead the Missouri State women’s soccer team (5-4-2, 1-0-0) to victory in the conference opener against UNI (2-6-2, 0-1-0) at Plaster Field today. Senior Jenna Dobkins created a turnover early in the first minute. Handley gained possession of the turnover and drilled the ball into the upper right corner of the net from 25 yards out to get Missouri State on the board 21 seconds into the match. The goal would stand up as the Bears defeated the Panthers 1-0.

The Bears outshot UNI, 12-7, in the match. Handley led the Bears with four shots. Samantha Aguilar added three shots for Missouri State. Missouri State had several chances to add to the lead in the second half, but UNI keeper Lauren Potzman made two spectacular saves (check them out on my Youtube Channel) to keep the Panthers close.

Missouri State sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Teahan made two saves, but left the match in the eighth minute due to injury. Freshman keeper Chelsea Voet stepped in and made one save to preserve the shutout and the win.

Southern Methodist Mustangs – 1
The Missouri State men’s soccer team (4-2-1, 1-0-0) used a second half surge to rally and defeat SMU (3-4-1) in the final match of the SMU Classic in Dallas today. The Bears got goals from Nick Dryden, Paul Paradise and Jordan Hoffman in the second half to overcome a 1-0 deficit at halftime. Missouri State goalkeeper Alex Riggs made three saves in the win for the Bears.

Dryden scored in the 55th minute off of a free kick from senior Johannes Demarzi to knot the score at one. Paradise put the Bears ahead in the 68th minute on a cross into the box from David Buckenheimer and Jordan Hoffman. Hoffman would add the insurance goal in the 85th minute off a pass from Edin Sabic and Brandon Durk.

SMU Classic All-Tournament Team included Carl Wozcyenski, UAB as MVP as well as three Bear’s players: Nick Dryden (Springfield SC/West Plains Zizzers), Thomas Vania and Alex Riggs.

Houston Baptist Huskies – 1
The Huskies got their goal in the 89th minute off an Adam Jakle pass into the box that Duke Ogega put in the corner of the net.

Missouri State will face host, SMU, in the finale of the SMU Classic on Sunday with a 1:30 kickoff at Westcott Field.

The Bears return home for a three-game homestand beginning Thursday, October 1 against Denver at 4:00 p.m. Missouri State will then host Eastern Illinois October 4 at 1:00 p.m. and Creighton October 7 at 4:00 p.m. to open the home portion of conference play.
