Ozarks Conference: Kickapoo Chiefs Get Late Winner Against Parkview Vikings
Kickapoo Chiefs – 2
Parkview Vikings – 1
The Vikings and Chiefs went at it tonight in a tightly contested contest that was decided in the 75th minute. The game winner was scored by senior Skyler Russell when he was able to loft a ball from the far right side to the far side netting, finally beating goalkeeper Jonathan Malter who had handled everything thrown at him in the 2nd half, including a key diving save only 3 minutes earlier when Russell was able to sneak into the 6 yard box on the left side.

The win came as a result of the Chief’s ability to finally put the ball on the surface and maintain possession, controlling the majority of play the final 20 minutes. Parkview had several opportunities, setting the tempo and taking an early lead on Brian Otradovec’s goal in the 6th minute. Otradovec benefited from Jordan Houseman’s hard work on the right side, winning a foot race for the ball and sending it back into the box from the endline. It was that type of work, in combination with Jared Moore in the center, that made it hard for the Chief’s to establish any rhythm themselves. When the Chief’s did challenge, it came from well-timed runs on balls sent over the back line, targeting Russell in particular. The tying goal was scored by freshman Aaron Strunk, recently moved from the back line to his preferred position on the front line. He opportunistically lofted a ball over the defense after a scramble as Malter came out to stuff Russell twice as he made a direct run into the box from Ian Kennedy’s fine diagonal ball out of the midfield. When the ball popped loose on the left side, Strunk was there.

Both teams will be working on winning goal kicks and establishing a more physical presence after this game, as I’ve never seen so many balls go uncontested and hit the ground. An important District 11 and Ozarks Conference win for the Chiefs but one that left as many questions as it answered.

Ozark Tigers – 1
Carthage Tigers – 0
In a rematch of the Christian County Tournament title match, this time it is the Ozark Tigers that earn the one goal shutout win. Also an important Central Ozark Conference win for the team from Christian County.
