Drury Panthers Ranked 4th, Missouri S&T 8th In GLVC Men’s Soccer Coaches Poll
For the second consecutive year, Northern Kentucky University has been chosen as the favorite to claim the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Championship. In a vote of the GLVC’s 15 head coaches, the Norse collected 190 total points and 10 first-place votes to finish atop the 2009 GLVC Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
The Norse edged Lewis for the top spot in the poll. The Flyers (14-1-4, 9-1-1 GLVC) collected 180 total points and two-first place votes. They were followed by defending GLVC Champion Rockhurst who placed third in the annual publication. Rockhurst (16-1-4, 10-0-2) garnered 174 points and two first-place votes.
The final first-place vote was given to Drury. The Panthers (13-5-3, 7-4-1) placed fourth in the poll with 153 total points.
1st year Head Coach Ryan Swan, who had served as the team’s associate head coach last season, inherits the bulk of a DU squad that finished 13-5-3 overall and 7-4-1 in the GLVC last season, reaching the GLVC Tournament semifinals for the first time in four years as a league member. The Panthers open the season at Truman State on August 28 and at home on August 30 against Newman.
Northern Kentucky finished the 2008 campaign 16-3-4 overall and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Semifinal before falling in overtime to Dowling, 2-1. The Norse posted a 9-1-1 league mark and tied for second in the GLVC regular season standings. NKU advanced to the championship match of the GLVC tournament for the second consecutive year in 2008, but fell to Rockhurst, 2-0.
The Norse return 14 lettermen and eight starters from last year’s squad, including Ron Lenz Division II Player of the Year and GLVC Offensive Player of the Year Steven Beattie. NKU will be looking to collect its first GLVC Championship in men’s soccer since 1995. The Norse have claimed the title four times.
Illinois-Springfield and Maryville will be competing in the GLVC for the first time in 2009. The two new members bring the league’s membership to 15 for the 2009-10 academic year. The institutions will be immediately eligible to compete for the GLVC Championship in 2009, however, UIS will not be eligible to compete in the NCAA Tournament until 2010 and Maryville earns the right in 2011.
The 15 member institutions will compete in a 14-match round robin conference schedule and the top eight teams in the league standings will advance to the 2009 GLVC Tournament which is scheduled to begin on Nov. 1. The highest remaining seed following the quarterfinal round will host the GLVC semifinals and final on Nov. 6 and 8, respectively.

USA Faces Mexico In Azteca Stadium Wednesday – Watch Parties!
Qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup returns for the U.S. Men’s National Team, with their sixth of 10 qualifying matches for South Africa on Wednesday, Aug. 12, against Mexico. The match, which will be broadcast live on mun2 and Telemundo, kicks off at 3 p.m. CT from the famed Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Additionally, ESPN will provide unprecedented studio coverage, highlighted by a 30-minute SportsCenter 2010 FIFA World Cup -Qualifying Special from outside Estadio Azteca beginning at 2:30 p.m. CT.
Following runner-up finishes at the FIFA Confederations Cup and CONCACAF Gold Cup, the U.S. resumes the final round of qualifying for the CONCACAF region sitting in second place after five games with 10 points, two points behind top-of-the-table Costa Rica. Mexico is in fourth with six points, one point behind third-place Honduras. Here is the info I was able to find on Mun2 and it’s availability locally:
DirecTV – mun2 is channel 410
Dish Network – mun 2 is channel 838
Mediacom – mun2 is channel 693
If you want to get out and enjoy the game, I will be watching at Cielito Lindo on Glenstone, just north of the Krispy Kreme located at Chestnut Expressway. I figure if our boys can handle the pressure in the Azteca, I can handle the margaritas and potential taunts at CL. While my waiter couldn’t confirm other Cielito Lindo locations access to satellite, I know the location on National just North of Battlefield has been a location where fans have watched games in the past.
If you want a friendlier environment, turns out Coyote’s Adobe Cafe & Bar are fans and will be showing the game tomorrow. A rumor of fan specials is also active. Contact Kelly Ross at Lake Country Soccer for more information.
The U.S. holds a lifetime record of 0-22-1 on Mexican soil, the lone result a 0-0 draw on Nov. 2, 1997, in Mexico City. The roster of 20 (18 will dress) has 4 players who have played at Azteca – Landon Donovan, Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, and Steve Cherundolo. Plenty of information to prepare yourself with on the US Soccer website.

High School Soccer Preseason Has Begun
Today is the first day for Fall Sports to begin their preseason practice efforts. I didn’t make it out for the early morning runs and physical tests some schools use to begin their season. Now that the rain has finally arrived, I probably won’t make it out to the evening practices either, assuming they can be held. In the meantime, here are some stories for folks ready to start looking at the teams in our region:
Parkview Vikings Return 3 Starters
Krysten Clardy Meets The Blue Jays
Rolla Bulldogs Anticipate 50 Players
And while MSHSAA hasn’t gotten around to releasing the District Assignments for this season yet we can welcome a new Class 1 school to the Central Missouri mix as School of the Osage, in Lake Ozark, rolls out their Boys team for the first time. First game looks to be Friday August 28th at Sacred Heart followed by a game at Richland on August 31st. Welcome to the Indians!

Lance Parker To Face Matt Pickens During Saturday’s Chivas vs Rapids Game
According to an email sent by Coach John Leamy at Missouri State, it looks like Zach Thornton’s injury during the MLS All-Star game will in fact lead to recent Missouri State graduate Lance Parker getting his first start in a league match for his Chivas USA squad. Coincidentally, he’ll be facing Colorado which will also feature an MSU Bear between the pipes!
I just wanted to share the news that Missouri State University Soccer will have two starting goalkeepers facing off against each other this Saturday night when Chivas USA travels to Colorado and takes on the Rapids. Lance Parker will be starting for Chivas, as regular starter Zack Thorton was injured in last week’s MLS All Star game. Matt Pickens will once again be tending the nets for Colorado. The game is scheduled to kick off at 8:30PM Central Standard Time. Please check out the team’s websites at cdchivasusa.com and coloradorapids.com .
On a somewhat related note, the 23rd Annual Missouri State University Auction Benefiting Athletics will take place on Friday, August 14th for the first time in the new JQH Arena! Doors open at 5:00pm with the live auction taking place at 7:30pm. Additional information can be found at missouristatebears.com. Looking forward to seeing you there!
According the MLS preview, this is a crucial matchup in the Western Conference at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park as the Colorado Rapids and Chivas USA, tied for fourth place in the division. Both teams come into tied for what would be the final spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs. Thornton is listed as questionable with a quad strain while Dan Kennedy is out due to knee surgery. The game is on Direct Kick so find someone with satellite!
