Missouri Valley Conference Has 3 Preseason All-American’s

75px-MissouriValleyConference_100 College Soccer News has named their Pre-Season All-American teams and there are 3 representatives from the MVC. Creighton, who reached the Final 8 in the NCAA last year after defeating Missouri State 1-0 in the Conference Title game.

Seniors Chris Schuler and Byron Dacy of the Creighton men’s soccer team have been named Preseason All-Americans by College Soccer News. Schuler was honored on the first team and Dacy was tabbed to the second team. The duo is part of a seven member senior class which will look to lead the Bluejays to their fourth straight Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title and 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Schuler, who’s father Chris is a local referee and is 1st cousin to Michael and Tyler Bennett (Kickapoo), a second-team All-America honoree by both College Soccer News and the NSCAA last year, returns to lead one of the top defenses in the NCAA. The MVC Defensive Player of the Year as a junior last season, Schuler and the Bluejay defense posted a school record 13 shutouts to lead the nation in shutout percentage (.650). Creighton’s 0.48 goals against average ranked second in the country. A leader on CU’s backline, the 6-foot-4 defender paced the team by playing 1,852 of the team’s 1,864 minutes last year.

Dacy has been named to the preseason MAC Hermann Trophy watch list three times in his career and enters his fifth season at Creighton as the active leader in goals (17), assists (19) and points (53). Last year he returned following a medical redshirt due to a torn ACL in 2007 and started 10 of 20 matches for the Bluejays. The forward had two goals and four assists for eight points last year, after leading the team in points scored in both of his first two seasons on campus. The MVC Freshman of the Year in 2005, Dacy had career bests with nine goals and nine assists for 27 points during his rookie campaign.

Garrett Web has been named to the 3rd team after scoring 7 goals and passing out 5 assists last season en route to All-MVC honors.

Creighton and Drake have also been ranked in the Top 30 Preseason poll by College Soccer News.

2. Creighton – The Bluejays return nine starters from the 2008 team that was 16-2-2 overall and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. Byron Dacy and Ethan Finlay return to give the Jays a talented one-two punch up top while Chris Schuler and 5th year senior Seth Sinovic anchor a very solid Creighton backline.
21. Drake – Things are looking up in Des Moines as head coach Sean Holmes welcomes back ten starters from the 2008 team that will be looking for a return trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs earned their first ever trip to the NCAA Tourney and secured a school record thirteen wins last year. Seniors Garrett Webb and Kevin Shrout return up-top.

US Open Cup Quarterfinals Tonight

us open cup logoDown to the Final 8 and there’s a pair of Springfield boys still active. Cody Reinberg (Drury 2007/Springfield Demize/Des Moines Menace) plays for Harrisburg

Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2) at D.C. United (MLS)
Maryland Soccerplex – Boyds, MD | 7:30 p.m.

This is the fourth time the third-year USL2 club will meet an MLS team in the U.S. Open Cup. In 2007, the City Islanders defeated D.C. United 1-0 in a shock third-round result, then took the Revolution to the limit in the quarterfinals before losing 2-1.

The City Islanders lead the USL Second Division with 23 points from 12 matches, three points ahead of the Wilmington Hammerheads, though they lost 3-2 to Wilmington on Saturday in their last league match. Chad Severs has scored seven goals to lead Harrisburg, tied for the USL Second Division lead.

The winner of the United-Harrisburg match will meet the winner of all-USL quarterfinal between Rochester Rhinos (USL1) and Wilmington Hammerheads (USL). Harrisburg will travel to Rochester if they win, while playing host to Wilmington.

Kansas City Wizards (MLS) at Seattle Sounders F.C. (MLS)
Starfire Sports Complex – Tukwila, WA | 10 p.m.

Jack Jewsbury and the KC Wizards have moved into the Quarterfinals of the US Open Cup and as Mike at Down The Byline notes – We Want Silverware

Personally I think it’s time to bring home some more silverware, and the Open Cup is the opportune chance to do it. Only 3 games separate the Wizards from winning the Dewar Cup. With almost 5 years having gone by since the Wizards brought home some silverware, it’s time the Wizards change that and actually win a trophy. Winning the Open Cup would likely mean sacrificing a game or two in league play. If it brings home the Open Cup, I don’t have a major problem with that fact.

Will our boys move on?

Pulaski United FC Lady Hawks Spring Wrap Up

Both of the Lady Hawks girl’s competitive soccer teams competed in the Spring Outdoor season at Lake Country Soccer Complex in Springfield, MO.

96-97 Lady HawksThe younger Lady Hawks 95/96 finished up league play by losing their first game 0-2 to JB Marine of Springfield and tying the Lady Lakers of Camdenton 2-2 in their hard fought final game. The scoring came on unassisted goals by forward Chelsey Howser and midfielder Nique DuBois. The defense was consistently good throughout the season due the efforts of goalies Darby Price and Whitney Weems, sweeper Camia Blash, stopper Elizabeth Sisson, and fullbacks Morgan Malik, Meghann Hogue, Haley Harr and Alexis Goodwill. In addition to Chelsey Howser, forwards Alexus Lemasters, Katie Gaddis and Kaley Caracci contributed significantly to the Lady Hawks attack. The midfield chores were more than adequately handled by Kathleen Anderson, Hannah Wiley, Taylor Winking, Elyssia Lucio, Meg Anderson and, the aforementioned, Nique DuBois. The Lady hawks 95/96 finished third in the eight team LCS U14 Girls Red Division and are coached by Jeff Anderson and Mike Keeling.

94-95 ChampsThe senior Lady Hawks 94/95 captured the LCS U14 Girls Blue Division with two victories. They defeated Total Demize of Springfield, 4-1, in the first game on goals by forwards Emilee Starnes and Bailey Dent (2) and by midfielder Rhiannon “Scooter” Moore. Assists were provided by forwards Janelle Miller and Emilee Starnes as well as by midfielders Scooter Moore and Bohannon Rafter. The second win of the day was a 2-0 besting of the Rolla Lady Knights. Scoring came on unassisted goals by Scooter Moore and Emilee Starnes. While capable on the attack, the Lady Hawks success was most certainly due to their ability to keep their opponents from scoring, allowing only four goals scored during the eight game season. The defensive game was managed by goalies Lesley Larson and Ashley Tillott, sweeper Jourdan Kilthau, stopper Chantelle DuBois, and fullbacks Kellsey Skelton, Kaitlyn Winking and Mikalah Moise. In addition to Moore and Rafter, the tough midfield was manned by Izzy Paolicelli, Randi Secules, Kim Pryor, Alexys Hood and Sydney Hogue. The trio of Miller, Starnes and Dent provided the league’s highest scoring set of forwards. They are coached by Jon Moore and Dave Neeley.

The Lady Hawks will finish play for the year at the Show-Me State Games in July and then become part of the newly formed Pulaski United FC.

Upper Hutt City Soccer Welcomes Carver And Seabolt

UpperHuttTime for another update from New Zealand where for the second straight season Springfield is well represented. Here’s how the Chairman of the Upper Hutt City Soccer program describes it in their recent newsletter:

As many of you will know, we have another American import in our ranks this year, Patrick Carver, who has followed in the footsteps of Andy Cooper and Brian Pasierb last year in being a great ambassador for his country, and a great addition on the field for our men’s first team. carverOne of Patricks strengths is his ability to relate to our juniors, and his coaching skills and encouragement have certainly helped the 14th grade team I coach punch above their weight this season. Many of our juniors will get the chance to learn from Patrick in the upcoming school holiday program, where he will be running a number of sessions with our first team captain Andy Le Prue. Andy is a very classy player, and between them they will ensure the holiday program is a great one for the kids to be involved in. If you haven’t registered your kids yet, please contact our junior club captain John Blaikie.

Another exciting initiative is taking place next week with the arrival of Mike Seabolt, our contact in America who has facilitated the player imports that have occurred over the past 2 years. Mike will also be getting involved with our juniors and seniors while he is here, running coaching sessions and scouting for talent, and hopefully this relationship will provide opportunities for some of our kids to secure football scholarships into the USA in the future.

And as Patrick noted in his most recent email – We are doing well, just moved in to 3rd place on the table after a hard fought win against Naenae on Saturday. Came from behind three times to win the game 4-3. I had a goal, played most of the game. We have some tough games coming up but with a little luck, we could definitely win the league and get promoted to the top level of pro soccer in New Zealand.

I’ve converted the latest newsletter into a PDF so that you can get caught up with our two local boys and their efforts at Upper Hutt, just download The Harcourt Herald to view Patrick’s comments on his stay so far as well as Seabolt’s comments which include feedback on the recently concluded Confederations Cup (the good and the bad including some coaching advice for Bradley & Co) and the upcoming MSU season. You should also check out the Upper Hutt website and the September 2008 newsletter that includes some pictures of Andy Cooper and Brian Pasierb along with Pasierb’s bio.

Fox Soccer Channel has announced that they will provide live, English-language coverage of all U.S. games during the group stage of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, along with live coverage of one match from each of the knockout stages. The U.S. will be featured in those matches, should they advance. The entire TV schedule can be found here.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup™ is CONCACAF’s showpiece event for men’s teams as it crowns the regional champion. The USA won the inaugural eight-team competition in 1991, defeating Honduras before 40,000 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The teams battled to a scoreless draw and the first Gold Cup was decided on penalties with the stars & stripes emerging as 4:3 victors.

Mexico dominated the remainder of the decade, winning three consecutive CONCACAF Gold Cup™ titles (1993, 1996, 1998). Over 120,000 fans packed the Estadio Azteca as the tricolor claimed the 1993 title with a convincing 4:0 win over USA. The 2005 edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup™ was won by the USA on penalties over Panama in the Final held at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
