Dr. Frank “Doc” Dinka Memorial Men’s Soccer Scholarship Established At Missouri State

Frank DinkaGreetings,
I am pleased to announce an endowed scholarship has recently been established in honor of Dr. Frank “Doc” Dinka, who established the soccer program and became the first soccer coach at Missouri State University. Jan Stahle (former MSU coach), Dr. Bill O’Neill (former MSU Associate AD), and myself recently visited with Mrs. Sally Dinka (Frank’s wife) and shared the news. Mrs. Dinka could not have been more receptive and felt her late husband would have been honored to see this take place.

I want to personally thank Bill Rowe, Jan Stahle and Bill O’Neill for their assistance and dedication in making this endowment a reality. The Dr. Frank “Doc” Dinka Memorial Men’s Soccer Scholarship was established with an initial gift of $5,000. When the endowment reaches $10,000, it will continue to grow and provide scholarship assistance for the Men’s Soccer Program on an annual basis. The establishment of this endowment will be an everlasting tribute to Dr. Dinka’s contribution to Men’s Soccer at Missouri State University. If you are interested in contributing to the scholarship, the information is noted below. Please feel free to include any notes, thoughts or memories which will be forwarded to Mrs. Dinka. I know she would enjoy reading them.

A brief summary regarding Dr. Dinka:

Dr. Frank Dinka started the Soccer Club at Missouri State in 1967 and realized his dream of making soccer an intercollegiate sport at the University in 1981. He was the Bears’ first men’s soccer coach, a post he held for six seasons from 1981-86. A widely-popular member of the Political Science Department at MSU from 1961 until 1991, Dinka is known as the Godfather of Soccer in the Ozarks for his commitment to establishing programs and developing the sport in the Springfield region. Before passing away in 2005 at the age of 80, Dr. Dinka touched the lives of thousands of Missouri State students and is the cornerstone figure in the history of the Bears soccer programs.

Des Moines Menace Clinch Playoff Spot With Win Over Springfield Demize

Demize LogoThe Springfield Demize finished their final road trip of the season on Saturday evening in Des Moines where they fell 4-0 to the hosts. With the win the Des Moines Menace has secured a spot in the playoffs and a share of the division championship. With two games remaining, one point is all that is necessary to ensure home-field advantage along with the Heartland Division title.

Ben Taylor and a trio of Drake Bulldogs – Garrett Webb (recently named Preseason All-American), Julien Edwards and Hunter Kennedy – led the Menace’s late-game rampage.

Taylor assisted Webb (50th minute) and Edwards (84th) before capping off the night with an unassisted goal in the final minute. With his first points in eight matches, Taylor passes Armin Mujdzic (10 points) as the team’s leading scorer (11 points)

The Demize will finish their season at home on Friday against the Colorado Real Foxes. Their opportunity to move up from the bottom of the table disappeared with their 0-1 loss to the KC Brass last week. So the final goal will be to get their 3rd win of the season at home against the visitors. Game time is 7:30 pm, come out and cheer on the home side!

US MNT Faces Haiti Saturday 6pm – Join Me At Fox & Hound

Gold Cup 2009 logo_enAfter clinching a quarterfinal berth with victories against Grenada and Honduras, the U.S. Men’s National Team will face Haiti to determine first place in Group B. The MNT can win the group with a victory or a tie at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, July 11, at 6 p.m. live on Fox Soccer Channel.

The U.S. is 6-0-1 in Gold Cup matches at Gillette Stadium, and has rolled with wins in the first two games of the Gold Cup for the 10th time. So far six different players have produced six goals for the U.S., and Troy Perkins has held strong in goal with his first two career shutouts.

I’ll be enjoying the game at either Fox & Hound or, if he get’s the Fox Soccer Channel in time, Boomer’s (formerly Coester’s) which has now opened. Come join me for a game that should offer some offensive fireworks and give Mom the night off from cooking. To confirm where I’ll be, follow me on Twitter or check the center column where my Twitter feed is located on the website.

I Should Have Been Dead

PH2008061303948After seeing his play last night against Hondura’s, and then reading this story in the Washington Post, I’ll have a different view of Santino Quaranta the next time we see him on the pitch (Saturday against Haiti?)

Santino Quaranta’s right hand was throbbing, the consequence of a Toronto player stepping on him during D.C. United’s home opener in early April. The swelling spread past his wrist and toward the freshest and most poignant tattoo on his ink-covered upper body: “10-23-07,” a time stamp marking the turning point in his self-destructive life.

Alcohol and drugs are killing kids in this town and I’ve personally seen one young man who earned a D1 scholarship, stoop to stealing from his own mother to get the painkillers.

“Tino had a wonderful knack for telling you what you wanted to hear,” said midfielder Ben Olsen, a member of United since 1998 and the only MLS player Quaranta communicated with while in rehab. “He is as charismatic and loving as a person could be. You wanted to believe him. He was like a con man: He knew exactly what to say and when to say it. . . . A lot of us brushed it off, unfortunately, on him being a kid. And maybe that’s why he got away with it.”

US MNT Faces Honduras Tonight In Gold Cup 2009

Gold Cup 2009 logo_enWith a 4-0 win against Grenada in the books, the U.S. Men’s National Team continues its quest for a third-consecutive CONCACAF Gold Cup championship when it takes on Honduras on Wednesday, July 8, at 8 pm at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., live on Fox Soccer Channel. Four 2008 Olympians scored for the U.S. in the Independence Day opener with Freddy Adu, Stuart Holden, Robbie Rogers and Charlie Davies all finding the back of the net.

Currently the Group B leaders with one win and a plus-four goal differential, the U.S. closes out the group against Haiti on July 11 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. ET.

Plenty of background on the games available on the US Soccer website while Soccer By Ives offers a look back at the World Cup qualifier played September 1st 2001 between these two teams in DC. As he notes, it’s the day Honduras took over RFK.

Should be a good game tonight. Join me at the Fox & Hound if you’d like to enjoy the game with me and other US fans!
