KC Wizards Sign Zoltan Hercegfalvi

KC Wizards LogoZoltan Hercegfalvi has officially been added to the Kansas City Wizards roster with the receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate. Zoltan, which will appear on the back of his #20 jersey, will be available for selection immediately as soon as he is deemed fit enough to contribute according to the Hillcrest Road blog.

“I’ve always had the desire to play outside of Hungary,” Zoltan said. “Now that soccer in the United States has taken a big step forward, I’m very excited to come here. I describe myself as a very technical player. I have a great love for the game of soccer, and people will see that when I play. I consider myself to be a complete forward. I can finish, and I also set up opportunities for other players.”

US Men’s National Team – Woah!

ussoccer_smallSo, the usual suspects are commenting on Facebook about yesterday’s 5-0 loss to Mexico. There are plenty of theories and thoughts about what the result means in the bigger picture – World Cup 2010.

Me – I think Mexico was a very enjoyable team to watch with their passing and finishing and the result reminded me of why I didn’t get very excited following the US win in the Confederation’s Cup over Spain. I knew how close that team was to the one that lost 1-3 to Costa Rica a month earlier. My questions revolve around Bradley’s strategy at this stage in the qualifying process. Should we have used a B squad that may have 2-4 members on the 2010 World Cup roster and given Mexico new life or should we be using these tournaments as the opportunity to solidify the anticipated roster? What do you think?

There are three games in the next six weeks, all WC 2010 qualifying matches. It will be interesting to see what the rosters look like then.
August 12th- at Mexico, Estadio Azteca, Mexico City
September 5th- vs. El Salvador, Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, Utah
September 9th- at Trinidad & Tobago, site TBD

BTW, the US at Mexico game is scheduled to be shown on MUN2, described here:

If you have DirecTV, mun2 can be found in channel 410 and can be seen as part of the DirecTV Latin Programming package. Don’t get that package? If you’re dead set on watching the match in English, you may want to consider ordering the Latin Programming package for the month of August and cancelling after the match. There is no word yet on who will be calling the game for mun2.

Here are some articles looking at yesterday’s results as well. Chime in with your thoughts!

US Men Face Mexico Sunday In Gold Cup Final

Gold Cup 2009 logo_enThe U.S. Men’s National Team advanced to the CONCACAF Gold Cup final for the third time in a row and seventh overall with a clinical 2-0 victory against Honduras in the semifinals this evening behind goals from Clarence Goodson and Kenny Cooper at Soldier Field in Chicago. Troy Perkins recorded his third shutout of the Gold Cup and his second against Honduras, making two spectacular saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The U.S. will be looking for their third straight regional championship on Sunday, July 26 at 2 p.m. at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. against Mexico. This will be the fourth meeting between the U.S. and Mexico in the Gold Cup final. The U.S. lost to Mexico 4-0 in 1993 and 1-0 in 1998, but defeated their arch rival 2-1 in the last Gold Cup final in 2007, which earned them a spot in the 2009 Confederations Cup. Sunday’s match will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel

Missouri State Bears High School Boys Team Camp

The Boys Team Camp is wrapping up today over at Missouri State University and as is my tradition, I took in the All-Star game this morning. With 14 teams and over 240 players, the game featured the top 10% of players in camp. My MVP, on the basis of a pair of quality goals scored, was senior Eric Grisham (#10, Maroon team) of the Washington Blue Jays. One of three senior Blue Jay’s to be included, the District 10 member will look to improve their finish this season despite losing 11 players from last years team. I’ve got an interview with Coach I’ll share with you in August on the Blue Jays.

I put some video’s from the All-Star game up on my YouTube Channel as well. Check them out.
