Coca-Cola/Dr Pepper Cup: U14 Springfield SC vs Springfield Soccer Select

Another large turn out for what initially appeared to be a beautiful early Spring weekend that by 12:30 pm Sunday, when this photo was taken, had turned into a bitter cold tundra by many accounts. I try to remind myself during these moments that as much as I loved the game, my playing days in Chicago and St Louis more closely resembled these type of days than any other. I’m just not as useful and resilient as I was then!

Thanks to Tony Glavin SC, Scott Gallagher SC, Sedalia Select, Carrera, JB Marine, Total Demize SC, Springfield SC, KC Select and the other clubs who participated this weekend.

The fields are beautiful, the games ran on time, surrounding merchants were pleasant and resaonably priced. As a soccer community, we need to press upon the officials to keep the game of soccer at the feet. Good clean tackles are obviously fine, but the elbows, two handed pushing, shirt pulling…all violations. Several officials witnessed violations, put whistle to mouth, and didn’t blow….one official told a player..”that’s twice with the pushing #11″, but no call. Refs set the tone of the game, if it is allowed once, twice, three times, the game turns into a slugfest, not a soccer match. Call the violation as soon as it happens, as many times as necessary, send a message that we play soccer with our feet and bodies, not with our hands.
