Jack Jewsbury Opens US MNT Camp With Big News

KC Wiz at Missouri State Bears Jack and his wife Brittany will be welcoming their first child in May. During one of the silly interviews they are sometimes subjected to, Jack mentioned it as part of his holiday treats:

Best Given – We are having a baby girl in May, so we gave our parents webcams so they will be able to see the little one

Best Received – My parents gave us a video camera so we can start recording the memories when our daughter is born

Congratulations Jack and Brittany! Categorized under Youth Soccer :) BTW, the photo is from the Wizards exhibition against Missouri State in April 2006.

UPDATE – US Soccer uploaded a short video from the 1st day of camp. You can get glimpses of Jack during the running and drills.

Pulaski County Missouri Welcomes Reyes Soccer Training Program

From the Waynesville Daily Guide on December 29th

In some families, sports are simply a pastime, like flying kites or collecting stamps. In others, sports are a way of life. For Julio and Maximo Reyes, it runs through their DNA. Julio and Maximo were professional soccer players. So were their brothers Alberto and Daniel. Their father, Maximo Sr., was a member of the 1948 Peruvian Olympic track team in London, where he participated in the triple jump and the 100-m dash. The brothers began playing in their hometown of Lima, Peru, and have played all over the Americas and in Europe. And now they’re doing something that Pulaski County has never seen before: a real soccer academy—one that, if everything goes as planned, will eventually turn into a competitive club.

From an earlier story – Spots are still open for the Reyes Soccer Training Program.
The program, the first of its kind in Pulaski County, is a winter skills program designed to get youth soccer players more quality training time in the offseason. Brothers Maximo and Julio Reyes will instruct players in technical development, tactical thinking and basic all-around skills.

Both brothers have played high-level professional soccer in Peru. Julio played for Alianza Lima and the Panama Euro Kickers F.C., while Maximo played for 14 years for such high-profile clubs in Venezuela as Estudianted de Merido, Deportivo Italia and Deportiva Tachira, He also played for the Peruvian National Team.

Right now the program has 34 players signed up but would accept more, especially at the youngest (seven-to-nine-year-olds) and oldest levels (14-to-16-year-olds). Normal cost is $250 for the 15-week program, but discounted rates are available for latecomers due to the shorter registration notice.

For more information contact Alberto Reyes at 573-337-8214 (alberto.reyesvaldez@us.army.mil) or Julio Reyes at 973-572-7520 (julrey18@hotmail.com).

The Phoenix News Looks at Club Soccer

The headline is – Arizona Club Soccer Produces Scholarship-Backed Players, but At What Cost?

For all his wily ways, Armstrong has delivered what club soccer parents paid for — victory at any cost and opportunities to play before college scouts. Former Sereno parent Jim Dougher says, “Les was verbally abusive, in my opinion. His method for motivation was fear and intimidation, a lot of threats. But he really does a good job of getting kids prepared to play at a college level.”

Competitive parents created the market for coaches like Armstrong. Now, it seems, they’re getting what they paid for.

The Ozark’s has it’s share of issues with parents and players, but I haven’t seen anything that approaches this level yet. And we’ve explored the economic facts that the cost of club soccer will NOT be recovered via college scholarship funds except for a very small minority (1%) of the players.

So as we begin a new year, what are the issues we should be exploring here in the Ozarks? Hat tip to TIAS.

Want To See Some Excellent Soccer?

I’ve got a couple of fine opportunities for you:

You can look back at MLSnet.com’s Best XI for 2008, archived on MLSLIVE.tv. It includes one KC Wizards game, their 3-2 overtime win over the San Jose Earthquake on October 18th as they worked to reach the playoffs

For much of 2008, Claudio Lopez had lived up to lofty expectations when anything but a victory would have left the Wizards’ playoff outlook murky entering the season’s final weekend. Proving worthy of his Designated Player tag, Lopez had a hand in all three Kansas City goals, scoring the first himself, then assisting on the final two, including a picture perfect corner kick three minutes into stoppage time that Herculez Gomez pushed past Joe Cannon for the emotional game-winner.

For a more current opportunity, mark your calendar or set your DVR for Sunday at noon. Update – 10am GOL TV

Villarreal travel to Madrid to face Real Madrid on Sunday, as the Yellow Submarine looks to start 2009 out with a big win. Jozy Altidore’s team hasn’t beat Real Madrid in 10 years, but with the reigning champions struggling this could be the weekend where that changes.

US Soccer Global has the details.

Happy Hogmanay

Aye ye lads and lasses, Happy Hogmanay. I’m getting my celebration on in St Louis but the weekend will be an opportunity to get caught up on the post-season recognition the college players received. Need to complete that list so that I can incorporate it into my decisions on the annual Top 10 list that will come out Monday January 5th. But it’s January 1st now so are any of you bringing good-luck to your friends by being the first-foot?

In the meantime, here are some final pointers to 2008.

Ollie Irish on Big Soccer offers his Personal Highlights, opening with

1. John Terry’s penalty miss in the Champions League final
I don’t like John Terry BigSoccer Topics much. I don’t like his chavvy hairstyle, I don’t like his yobbish past, I don’t like his parking etiquette, I don’t like the way he always calls Frank Lampard BigSoccer Topics ‘Lampsy’ and Wayne Rooney BigSoccer Topics ‘Wazza’. I do like the fact that Terry has to live forever with the knowledge that he choked from the penalty spot – yeah, he slipped, but he slipped because he choked – in the biggest match of his career. I like that a lot.

and finishing here.

Oh, and I’ve been trying to ensure that I recognize some of the career records that were set at the High School level. If you have a boy or a girl player who set school records in 2008, send me a reminder :)
