Missouri High School Soccer: Southwest Region Quarterfinal Reports

Update – apologies on the lack of information here. Had a technical glitch, working between my sister’s PC and then my iPhone application for updating this site (have you noticed my real time reports that then get cleaned up later?) apparently an earlier update was erased by a later followup from the other platform.

    Class 1 Quarterfinals

Video from 23FightinIrish’s YouTube channel of Reid Harbach’s goal

Springfield Catholic – 1
Fatima Comets – 0
From Israel Potoczny, Sports Editor — Lebanon Daily Record
Freshman Reid Harbach scored with 5:50 remaining to send Catholic to the Final Four. Catholic dominated possession, but Fatima goal keeperJordan Bock made 17 saves, many in spectacular fashion to keep the Comets in the game.

From a Catholic parent: The poor field conditions made it difficult for both teams last night but Catholic also had difficulty putting shots on frame. The game winner was a run from Reid’s defensive position all the way into the box, where he put his shot to the far post under the goalkeeper.

John Burroughs (16-10-1) – 4
Missouri Military Academy (17-3) – 0

Catholic will play against John Burroughs at 1:00 pm Friday November 21st at the A-B Soccer Complex in Fenton in the semifinals of the State Final 4.

Saxony Lutheran (19-7) – 1
Trinity Catholic (12-11-1) – 2
Trinity Coach Vince Drake returns to the Finals for the first time in 4 years? for his 20th visit? The Titans, who haven’t advanced this far in post-season play since 2005 when they lost to Priory in the state final, now will turn their attention to the Crusaders from St. Pius X, who knocked off Kansas City St. Paul 2-1 Thursday to also advance to the semis.

St. Paul Lutheran (20-1) – 1
St. Pius X (Kansas CIty) (21-3) – 2

Trinity will play St Pius X at 11:00 am Friday November 21st at the A-B Soccer Complex in Fenton in the semifinals of the State Final 4.

    Class 2 Quarterfinal

Bolivar Liberators – 2
Pembroke Hill Raider – 3
PH wins on a goal in the 108th minute, just two minutes before the game would have gone to PK’s

Pembroke Hill’s Ross Payne might have been the only one in the stadium who knew exactly what was about to happen. On a foul kick 25 yards from the goal in the second overtime, Payne turned to his teammate Ryan Buck. “I got this,” Payne said.

He rocked back and shot the ball past half of Bolivar’s team, landing it in the top right corner of the net. The shot gave Pembroke Hill a 3-2 Class 2 quarterfinal win over Bolivar in Harrisonville.

Priory (20-4) – 0
St. Dominic (20-6-1) – 2

Pembroke Hill will play St Dominic at 2:00 pm Friday November 21st at the A-B Soccer Complex in Fenton in the semifinals of the State Final 4.

Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) (21-4) – 2
St. Mary’s (St. Louis) (18-7-1) – 0

Helias (22-2-1) – 2
Smithville (23-1) – 0

Jeff City Helias will play Cape Notre Dame at 12:00 pm Friday November 21st at the A-B Soccer Complex in Fenton in the semifinals of the State Final 4. It will be Helias’ first trip to the Final Four since making back-to-back appearances in 2000 and 2001. The Crusaders finished fourth both times.

A regional Coach offered the following insight on the Final 4 this year:
Class 1
District Champs – 1 Public school (Fatima – no private schools in District 5), 7 Private Schools – Final Four is all Private Schools
Class 2 District Champs – 2 Public (No private schools in District 5 – Bolivar or 8), 6 Private Schools – Final Four all Private

That is different then even the last three years, when we know this region was represented by Cassville, West Plains and Cassville in Class 2 and Crocker in Class 1 last year. This year it’s Catholic :)

  1. GREAT YEAR CATHOLIC!!!!! NOW LETS BRING HOME THAT FIRST PLACE PLAQUE/TROPHY THING!!!!!!!!!

  2. Is there a significance to the comment about the private schools? Each school tends to find their niche.
