Greenwood Blue Jays – 4
New Covenant Academy Warriors – 0
Junior Chris Aiken, and his Blue Jay teammates, brought their “A game” tonight and earned a measure of revenge for the upset in 2006 that was the first of the Warrior’s two straight District titles. Aiken opened the scoring for the Jays in the 22nd minute when he hammered a shot from the right side of the box. Less than a minute later, senior Brad Cook ran onto Stuart Beezley’s square ball at the top of the box, won on a hard tackle on the left side. Cook’s run took him in alone on the keeper and he calmly slotted the ball into the net for the early 2-0 lead. Things were already heating up, as seems to be the case when these two teams meet, and both Coaches were issued a warning by the official soon after.
There were opportunities for both sides throughout the game but it was the Jay’s that capitalized. Of particular note is their ability to create opportunities on the weak side, with Aiken, Beezley and Matt Cook in particular creating time and space with their runs. That was how Aiken got his first and it was the Jay’s relentless attack that allowed him to complete the hat trick on the evening, as he scored in the 54th and again in 72nd minute.
Springfield Catholic – 10
Laquey Hornets – 2
Catholic overwhelmed their opponent, who were led by lone senior Brandon Hernandez, who worked hard in the middle to direct his teammates. He’s taking those leadership skills to the Army next summer and we’ll all be better for it, knowing there are young men like him making that commitment.
Brandon and his teammates deserve recognition for their sportsmanship this evening. I caught the final 30 minutes of the match and despite being down on the scoreboard, each and every time a Hornet was involved in a collision, they were reaching out a hand to help their Catholic opponent up so they could continue the competition. I’m a Hornet’s fan. Goals were scored by Tyler Smith (32nd) and ? (43rd).

Bolivar Liberators – 3 (2 OT’s)
Marshfield Blue Jays – 2
Potentially looking ahead to their 3rd District final, the Liberators barely got past the Blue Jay’s this evening, requiring OT before finally earning the win. Marshfield opened the scoring on a PK before giving up the lead to Bolivar on an own goal and Matt Magana unassisted goal. Senior Ethan Jernigan, fresh from his game-winning PK on Saturday, tied the game for Marshfield in the 76th minute scoring off a set play.
Mitchell Waters got the game winner in the 100th minute, scoring off a throw-in from Magana. The shot deflects off a Marshfield defender past the keeper for the golden goal.
Cassville Wildcats – 2
Monett Cubs – 1
The fourth game was the critical one, as the Wildcats finally got past their Big 8 Conference foes. Monett took the lead on Maurice Trujillo’s goal, only to give up two. Uziel Franco scored unassisted and center back Justin Mills got the game winner, unassisted in the 76th minute. Or was it Bryan Schroder?
