On a rainy night with a pronounced diagonal crosswind, the Pembroke Hill Raiders outlasted a lightning delay and the top-seeded Harrisonville Wildcats 4-3.
Going against the wind in the first half, the Raiders struck quickly, as Sam Olson one-timed a cross from Will Patterson just two minutes into the game. The game remained 1-0 for most of the next half hour, until PHS goalie Nick Gheorghita came off his line and out of the box in an attempt to clear a ball, but found himself unable to get back into position and Harrisonville punched in the tying goal.
Less than a minute later, the Raiders retook the lead. Chris Rios’ cross found the head of Ross Payne to make it 2-1.
An unusual call of obstruction in the box gave the Wildcats a huge opportunity that they failed to convert. The Wildcats took an indirect free kick from near the penalty spot, but the shot sailed wide.
Moments later, Rios and Payne collaborated again on a similar run and header to make the score 3-1 at the half.
Working against the wind in the second half, the Wildcats pulled to within a goal off a corner kick conversion, a nearside header.
The Raiders got some breathing room after a scrum in front of the goal. The ball was cleared outside of the box, but midfielder Ryan Buck drilled a 25-yard blast upper ninety, beating the diving CJ Harkrader.
The Wildcats put the pressure on, and made the score 4-3 with a goal following a long throw-in that eluded the PHS defense.
With 4:34 to play, lightning in the area forced a delay of approximately half an hour. When play resumed, Harrisonville had one strong opportunity to get the tying goal, but Gheoghita deflected a near-side blast wide. The resulting corner kick was cleared, and Pembroke survived the final minutes.
Harrisonville’s goals were scored by Caleb Grobill, Cody Blentlinger, and Ben Hunter. They finish the season 18-5.
Pembroke Hill, 10-12-1, wins Class 2 District 6 in their first year of Class 2 play. The Raiders are coming off four consecutive Class 1 final fours. They will play the winner of Class 5, either Cassville or Bolivar.
