KhaiUyen Huynh (#3) celebrates with teammate K-Ro (#10) and Tyler Krahenbuhl after scoring
Nixa Eagles – 3 (OT)
Carthage Tigers – 2
K-Ro strikes again, 90 seconds into overtime, giving the Eagles the win and keeping their Central Ozark Conference large school title hopes alive. The goal came as sr Tyler Bartell sent a ball to the top of the box where it was headed down by Chandler Hale. Jr Kaleb Romero ran onto to the ball, heading it into the net from just outside the 6 yard box for the golden goal.
The Eagles struck first in the game, against the run of play, when KhaiUyen Huynh knocked a loose ball into the open net in the 36th minute. It came after the Tigers had seen several good opportunities go for naught as they pushed the Eagles to the limit. Nixa struck again 90 seconds into the second half, pushing the ball down the right side after Carthage had an early chance from the restart. In what a senior referee described as ‘the best individual effort goal I’ve seen this year’, Romero collected the final pass outside the box, beat his defender down the right side before turning the corner and taking the ball into the six yard box where he was able to flick it quickly to the near post after freezing the keeper.
The Tigers are too good a squad to stay down for long and over the next twenty minutes they were able to come back with a pair of goals of their own to tie the game. In the 48th minute, sophomore Joe Curti headed a rebound of a shot that caromed off of the cross bar into the net. The tying goal was scored in the 62nd minute and while the intent may have been to cross the ball, it sailed just over the goalkeeper’s outstretched arms and settled into the far side netting. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the final 20 minutes saw them neglect their quality midfield, opting for long balls and attempted break-aways rather then the patient, control game they are capable of playing.
A Carthage win this evening would have given them the inaugural large school Central Ozark Conference crown with a 6-0 record. The loss leaves them at 5-1 while the Eagles are 4-1 with a game at Branson next week. A win will ensure Co-Champion status with comparable 5-1 records, Nixa’s loss coming at Neosho.
