NJCAA Soccer Report: Barton County CC Improves to 16-0-1

The Barton County CC Men’s soccer team concluded a tough week with two big victories. Last Wednesday, the #4 ranked Cougars traveled to #14 Northern-Oklahoma and came away with a 3-1 victory. Springfield Demize midfielder Oscar Narvaez recorded a goal and an assist in the contest, as fellow Demize teammate Kyle Dubay also recorded one assist in the contest. On Saturday afternoon, Barton hosted previously undefeated Johnson County CC in a game that had numerous implications. Both were undefeated with Johnson actually coming in ahead of Barton in terms of points as the Cougars had one conference tie. Barton came out very strong and had a flurry of chances in the first 20 minutes. The final score went 3-0 to Barton in a dominating performance. Again, Narvaez had an impressive day scoring once and assisting on another. Demize defenders Ous Senghore and James Neighbour both had strong performances limiting Johnson’s chances. The wins improve Barton’s record to 16-0-1.

A couple of school records were broken this week individually by Narvaez and goalkeeper Donovan Dowling. Oscar broke the career assists record as he notched his 15th in his career. He is just two assists off of the single season mark with his 9 on the year, with three games remaining. Narvaez ranks in the top 25 in the country in assists. Dowling broke both the single season and career shutout record with his 11th of the season and 21st overall in his career. Both records were previously held by All-American Craig Ratanamorn, currently at Marshall University. Dowling stands with a .308 goals against average, good for 2nd overall in the country.

Barton will conclude their regular season schedule this week with Neosho County (last season’s conference runner-up) tonight in Chanute, KS, Kansas City Kansas CC at home on Saturday, and finally an away game at Independence CC on Tuesday. Three wins would wrap up an undefeated regular season with one of the toughest schedules in the country playing five teams ranked in the top 15 over the course of the season.

Looking ahead at the national scene, the usual suspects are there are the top. Yavapai College out of Arizona are the perennial powers, winning three of the last six national championships, and participating in the National Tournament in every year of the schools existence. Tyler JC out of Texas will also be in the mix as they again have one of the best teams in the South. Marshalltown Community College out of Iowa also looks to be one of the premier teams in the Midwest, finishing 3rd last year at the National Tournament. Before Barton worries about these teams, they will still have to get past nationally ranked Garden City CC in their region, and Jefferson College in their district.
