Newman University scored two goals in the final 11:18 of the match to stun No. 7 Drury with a 3-2 victory in a non-conference match in Wichita Friday night. The Panthers, who fell to 8-2-0, had pulled out of a 1-1 halftime tie with a goal by sophomore Micah Whorton (assists to Jake Allison and Steve Wilczewski) at 58:31 for a 2-1 advantage. But the host Jets (5-5-1) rallied with goals at 78:42 by Brian Alvarez to tie it, then took the lead for good when Ty Wisener scored four minutes later on a breakaway. Nick Pfeifer (Carthage 2005) came on as a substitute in the game for the Jets. He’s played in every game, starting 7 of them.

Newman University senior Jenna Streit scored the only goal in the Jets women’s soccer upset of Drury University, ranked No. 8 in the Midwest Region. It was a signature win for Newman (5-4-2) in the school’s first season as a full-fledged NCAA Division II member. Drury lost despite out-shooting Newman by a 9-4 count as the Panthers fell to 5-4-2 overall.

The Panther’s visit Rockhurst for a pair of games on Sunday afternoon.
