Well this is what I consider to be good news. The SIU-Edwardsville Cougars have joined the Ohio Valley Conference with their move to Division I. Unfortunately for the soccer and wrestling squads, there is no men’s soccer. The Alton Telegraph reports that Athletic Director Brad Hewitt is in talks with the Missouri Valley Conference to participate as an affiliate, as fellow OVC school Eastern Illinois does now.
“We would be very pleased if we were considered for the Missouri Valley,” Kalish said. “I think it would be an ideal fit, because of the level of competition and the soccer reputation of the conference.”
Hewitt indicated that there has been general interest in SIUE joining the MVC for men’s soccer and that if the school is indeed admitted as an associate member, the hope would be for the Cougars to begin conference play in 2010.
“There are some strong teams,” Kalish said. “Creighton was nationally ranked last season and Bradley had a strong team. Being able to play the teams that are in the league would definitely help us.”
Of course Kalish will have to brush up on his MVC knowledge. I’m sure the Braves will remember he forgot about the fact that they reached the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last year, losing to Ohio State.
