Should be a great weekend for soccer in Southwest Missouri, with sunshine and warm weather promised. Remember to pack sunscreen this weekend!
The Ozarks Coca Cola / Dr Pepper LCS Friendship Cup this weekend will feature teams from the four-state region with Boys games from U10 to U18. Girls games are U11 to U14. Looking at the schedules I see regional teams including Springfield SC, Total SC, Hurricane Havlik (Strafford), Cyclones (Joplin), Strikers (Dr Jim Cook’s squad) as well as the Lady Hawks (Waynesville).
Tony Glavin is bringing a solid contingent from his location in Cottlesville (St Charles County). He’s also bringing the St Louis Lions, his PDL squad, who will face off against the Springfield Demize in an exhibition game at 6:00 pm on Saturday evening. Game time is 6:00 pm and the game will be played at Cooper #1. While the game will not feature full rosters as current NCAA college players are ineligible to play during the college year, it will be nice to get an early look at their anticipated roster which was posted on their site recently.
I’d like to invite any visiting teams looking for a quality meal at reasonable prices to consider my newest sponsor, Coester’s. As an added benefit, you can watch soccer at Springfield’s soccer-friendly sports bar (3 miles West of LCS, next to MSU). That includes the KC Wizards game on Saturday. It’s been moved to 4:00 pm to avoid conflicting with the Kansas Jayhawks Final 4 game at 7:40 pm on Saturday. The Wizards play Colorado Rapids Saturday.
And don’t forget there’s some fine college soccer available on Saturday as well. The Drury Panthers are hosting William Jewell College, with the women scheduled to play at 12:00 pm and the men at 2:00 pm. The Lady Cardinals include Parkview graduate Katie Brooks and the men’s team always is well-represented on the KC Brass PDL team.
The Drury men are playing a double-header, with Missouri Southern visiting at 4:30 pm. Kiley Cirillo’s (Kickapoo 1996) Lions includes several area players and he’s signed Stuart Ziegler of West Plains for the upcoming year.
