The Hilltoppers ended a 26 year old program on Friday due to budget cuts. Men’s soccer is the only sport of the 20 on campus that did not compete in the Sun Belt Conference and was eliminated in order to ensure the other programs were as competitive as possible in the face of funding constraints. The Toppers have competed as an affiliate member in the Missouri Valley Conference in men’s soccer since the 1997 season when the SBC discontinued its sponsorship of men’s soccer.
With only 5 of 10 members of the Missouri Valley Conference supporting Men’s Soccer, the MVC had two affiliate schools participating in Men’s soccer, Eastern Illinois being the other one. Makes you wonder why the University of Central Arkansas hasn’t been welcomed into the fold…
