While most of us are relaxing this week, or relaxing after keeping work hours to a minimum, the Springfield SC is representing at Disney’s Soccer Showcase, presented by Chelsea Football Club. The competition, rated the #1 youth soccer tournament in the U.S. in a Soccer America survey, began today and runs through the weekend.
There are four age groups participating, U15 up to U18. As a result of their State Championship and fine run to the semifinals of the Region II tournament, the boys qualified this year, a first for a Springfield-based team. We’ve had individuals participate in the past, playing for Scott Gallagher, but never a local team.
Our Boys are in the U17 Predator Bracket, with the three group games against:
AYSES 91 GOLD (Texas North)
AFC LIGHTNING 91 PREMIER (Georgia)
BALTIMORE BAYS 91 (Maryland)
SPRINGFIELD S.C. 90/91 (Missouri)
Familiar names in the Showcase Bracket include the Michigan Wolves, who barely got past our boys in the Regional semifinal last year, en route to winning Region II. The Chicago Magic are also in the upper (Showcase) Bracket while Region II opponents from last June Ft Wayne Fever and Chicago Sockers are in Predator Bracket, meaning we could see them again if the boys make it out of group play. The only other Missouri squad at the event is Lou Fusz-Popovic, who lost to our boys in the State semi-final game, and are playing the Copa Bracket, below us.
I’ve asked Coaches Carr and Alumbaugh to keep me up-to-date so that I can share the results with you. Use the links provided as well and keep the boys, and their competitive efforts, in mind as you quench your holiday thirst this week.
