Congratulations to Coach Phil Hodge of the Kickapoo Chiefs. He was named today by the NSCAA as the Coach of the Year for Large Public Schools in the State of Missouri. The Chiefs finished the season 23-4 and earned 3rd Place in State and were the number one public school.
Coach Hodge offered these words
Our team’s success was just that, a team effort. I am very appreciative of the award but it could not have been achieved without a lot of help. I would like to thank my assistant Michael Hines for all his dedication, support, and hard work throughout this very special season. To the players, job well done men, you deserved such a special season.
The NSCAA has three divisions for coaches — Large Public (500 students or more), Small Public (under 500 students) and Private/Parochial (all private or parochial schools, regardless of size). By winning in Missouri, Coach Hodge will be up for the Regional Coach of the Year against coaches from Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. That voting takes place next week.
Should he win that, he will be up for the National Coach of the Year, which will be determined in January at the annual convention. Previous National winners from the Metro St Louis area include Gene Baker (Granite City 1982), Terry Michler (CBC 1985 and recent contributor to this site), Ebbie Dunn (SLUH 1987), Greg Vitello (DeSmet 1993), J. Andrew Lodes (Incarnate Word 1996) and Maureen McVey (St Josephs Academy 2002),
