With a 1-0 win over Transylvania University this afternoon, the #20 ranked Bears have advanced to the Elite 8 of Division 3 soccer. They will face #1 ranked Trinity University (TX) Sunday at 1:00 pm. The winner advances to the national semifinals, held Friday-Saturday, Nov. 23-24, at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Sophomore John Hengel (pictured celebrating) scored the game-winning goal for the Bears at 54:21 when he took a pass from senior Marshall Plow and fired a shot to the far corner for the lone goal of the game. Plow beat the Transylvania defense down the right side before sending a pass through to Hengel, who went 10 yards with the ball before taking the shot.
The Bears improved to 16-4-2 with the win, while Transylvania ends its season with a 15-3-3 overall record. The 16 wins are a new single-season high for Clarke, and the most since Washington U. went 16-3-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals in 1995. This marks the eighth quarterfinal appearance for the Bears in school history.
Josh Florez (Parkview 2005), John Duncan (Joplin 2006) and Bryson Tombridge (Kickapoo 2006) are members of the Bears.
