Kickapoo Chiefs - Top Public School Team in Missouri

Kickapoo Chiefs vs Mehlville Panthers - 3rd Place State

With a 5-0 win over the Mehlville Panthers this afternoon, the Kickapoo Chiefs earned a 3rd place finish in the State and the distinction of being the top public school squad in the state.

Senior captain Heath Melugin (pictured with senior co-captain Zack Hay) scored a hat trick, getting the first goal of the game 9 1/2 minutes into the match, from Colton Sexton. Ryan Moses scored a brace, the first in the 21st minute and the second in the 57th, on an assist from Melugin. The final goals were scored in the 59th and 70th minutes.

With the goals, Melugin finished at 56 for the season, only three behind the school record set by Jack Jewsbury who had 59 in 199x and was the state record until 2005 (now at 72).

The Rockhurst Hawks defeated SLUH 1-0, on a goal in the 56th minute by Peter O’Neill to win the battle of the Jesuits and take the Missouri Class 3 title. I’ll have a story, courtesy of Coach Terry Michler (CBC, St Louis Lions) soon.

Congrates Kickapoo. I know how tuff it is for a public school to get there. Has a public school ever won in soccer in any class. I think there was 1 in class 1 but i’am not sure on that. I was wondering about the other classes. I think its way past time to seperate private and public in sports. It seems like it isn’t a even playing field in soccer and some other sports too.

Congratulations to Kickapoo. and yes Kevin, there have been public schools that have won state. I believe the last one was Oakville. The first public school (Nrmandy High School in St Louis) to win was back in 1974 when there was only one class. McCluer North also won 1975?
