Despite an 88th minute goal by sophomore Will Ziegahn to tie the game at 2-2, the Evansville Aces went on to defeat the Bears for the second time this season in the shootout following overtime.
The Aces found themselves behind after Johannes Demarzi scored on a give-and-go from Kyle Windmueller 6:28 into the match to put the Bears up, 1-0. However, the Aces scored two goals before halftime and held that lead until Ziegahn’s late equalizer.
Evansville went first in the shootout and had successful kicks by Kieran Purcell, Cory Elenio, Dan Gibson, and Ben Harner. Missouri State’s successful tries were by Will Ziegahn, Johannes Demarzi and Henry Lawrence. GK Alec Dufty of UE had a diving stop of Kyle Windmueller on the Bears’ second attempt, but after the required five PKs for each team, it was tied 3-3. In the sixth and decisive final kick, Harner scored, while Ryan Hennessey’s shot got past Dufty but hit the cross bar.
The game was a microcosm of the Bears season as the Bears were outshot 18 to 25 during the game, by margins of 6 - 11 and 5 - 12 in the first and second half. A 6 - 1 advantage in the final OT period is all that brought them close. It points to the value senior Lance Parker, 2nd Team All Conference goaltender in 2006, offered this team. Lance is pictured above with his likely successor, sophomore Alex Riggs (Ft Zumwalt South).
Andy Cooper, Yanik Joseph and Omar Shoucair also conclude their careers as Bears. Ciao fella’s.
