Rolla hosts the Thomas Whitefield Classic this weekend. This is a new tournament that will honor a former All-State performer for the Bulldogs and to generate scholarship funds in Thomas’ name. Some background on Thomas is provided below:
Thomas Whitefield was a standout soccer player for Rolla High School, playing varsity soccer for all four years from 1999 until his graduation in 2003 when he was named to the first team all state and awarded MVP of the region, district and team. On December 21 2003, having just completed his first semester on a soccer scholarship at the division 2 University of Tampa, he was sadly taken from us in a one car auto accident. Since his passing his family and friends have immortalized his memory by creating the Thomas Whitefield Memorial Soccer Scholarship fund. When the fund was established it was decided that resources would be raised to support both two annual scholarships in Thomas’ name and to provide special support for the RHS soccer program. The $1000 scholarships are awarded to the recipients of the Thomas Whitefield Award and go the player on each of the boys and girls varsity squads who “…. best demonstrate outstanding character, leadership, citizenship and personality, and in so doing earn the respect of their teammates“. In 2007 for the first time the special support will be used to defray some of the expenses associated with the Thomas Whitefield Classic.
The Rolla Daily News recruiting article offers more information on Thomas and the opportunities he had as a result of his success with the Bulldogs.
Good luck to all of the participants this weekend.
