On the heels of a pair of 1-0 wins this weekend, the Central Missouri Jennies have now defeated the three teams ranked with them Top 4 of the pre-season Coaches poll. UCM defeated the Southwest Baptist Bearcats 1-0 Saturday afternoon on a goal by Angela Dobbie, scored in the 13th minute from a corner kick. On Friday afternoon, the Jennies defeated Missouri Southern on an 80th minute goal by Lindsay Hoerl.
This game was played in the midfield today (as pictured) with both teams limited to about six shots on goal. While UCM showed very well in the first half, with Carrie Twellman and Randi Fernsler working well in the middle, the Bearcats responded to Coach Benjamin Wade’s exhortations at halftime and came out with greater urgency, earning three corner kicks in the second half after none in the first. It’s the third 0-1 loss for the Bearcats, although they have beaten Truman State 1-0 showing how tight the MIAA race could be this year. The Conference features home-and-away series so its too early to predict a final result.
The Jennies now rank 1st in the Central Region and will face #5 Truman S when they travel to Kirksville on Friday.
Erin Hainey (Kickapoo 2004) is a senior on this Jennie’s team that reached the NCAA tournament for the first time last year. I talked to Coach Lewis Theobald about her role on the team and here is what he had to say
We have five forwards that are getting regular playing time this season and all will start at times during the season. Erin’s particular strengths are her speed, aggressiveness and her two-way play. She is probably our best defending forward.
Erin was the first substitute today and played significant minutes, including the final 15 when SBU moved to a three forward formation and the Jennies were working hard to protect their lead. At one point, there were four area players on the pitch as Ashley Wilson (Neosho 2007) as well as Jackie and Jamie Sabel (Kickapoo 2006) are earning minutes for the Bearcats. Wilson and the Sabel’s are former Southwest All-Stars.
