In a game that must have been as frustrating for the SIU-Edwardsville coach as the men’s game was for the Panthers, the Drury women shook off the loss of leading scorer Aly Reynolds (due to language, what else – see Men’s report) in the 42nd minute and defeated the Cougars 2-0 this evening.
The game-winner was scored in the 41st minute by sophomore Caitlin Weins who was waiting on the far side when Mandi Little’s cross got past the defense as they focused on Reynolds. The play was started by Micah Little who alertly sent her sister down the right side with a quick one touch ball that Mandi was able to run onto. It was a combination that provided a reliable attack throughout the game.
Reynolds was sent off for language in what I understand was a complaint to herself about her play. It occurred 30 seconds after the Panthers scored but the Cougars were never able to capitalize. In fact, the best opportunity they had on the evening was when they hit the crossbar in the 21st minute.
Drury made a tactical decision that included man-marking the Cougars most dangerous player, junior Katie Yearian (pictured above, being defended by sophomore Emily West). That, and a lack of patience or creativity beyond attempting to find Yearian, allowed the Panthers to earn the win. While SIU was ranked highly in the preseason poll, they’ll need to find a greater sense of urgency if they want to maintain that lofty level.
The Panthers are a team that like the men, seem to understand the game and have established a strong level of rapport both on and off the pitch. With freshman Kelsey Long, who scored the second goal, a two-way threat that is working well with midfield general Sarah “Goody” Goodman, the pieces could be in place for a strong run this season. They face top-ranked Quincy on Sunday at noon. Go Panthers!
