The St Louis Post-Dispatch checks in with the #1 ranked team in the Metro St Louis region today, in advance of the Chiefs trip up there for a game at 4:00 pm.
Ranked No. 2 in the preseason by Student Sport, Chaminade (6-0) held the No. 1 spot in the inaugural National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll announced Tuesday. The Red Devils have also moved to the No. 1 spot in the Post-Dispatch rankings.
Over the weekend, Chaminade made another strong showing at the Great Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, knocking off Chicago power Downer’s Grove South 2-1 in penalty kicks and then beating the host school, North Central, 2-0.
Chaminade had five players named to the GMC all-tournament squad — goalkeeper Nick Collico, defenders Chad Vandegriffe and Nash Maduekwe, midfielder Mike Robson and forward Peter Hyde. Robson, a junior, was also named to the squad last year.
Saturday at 2 p.m., Chaminade will host third-ranked CBC (7-1) in the Metro Catholic Conference opener for both teams. CBC, which won its own tournament last weekend, has outscored opponents by a 34-5 count this season.
I’d love to get a game report and possibly a photo to share with the readers. Feel free to offer a contribution if you take in the game today.
Update: 3-0 CCP over Kickapoo; goals by Robson, Hyde and Dowd.
