The Baptist Bible College Patriots opened their season at home tonight against the Cavalry Bible College Warriors with a 2-3 loss. The game was a wide open affair as both teams pushed forward with regularity, each featuring key target men up top.
The Patriots were down 1-2 at halftime when I arrived and came out strong, taking advantage of a brisk wind to push the ball downfield. They equalized midway through the half when Tim Dimakos, a speedy freshman forward from Greece, broke down the middle of the pitch and buried his shot as he entered the box.
The Warriors regained the lead a short time later when they kept the ball on the ground and worked their way down the right side. The goal came after a forward was able to get around a defender near the endline. His initial shot was blocked but the rebound fell to a teammate who buried it.
The Patriots had several more opportunities, most coming through the field leadership of Matt Conley, only to be thwarted by goalkeeper Eric Fuerst (see above) who was a strong presence in the box.
I asked Dave Drury, Athletic Director at BBC, for some background on the team. Here’s what he offered:
The Patriots return 6 players from last year’s team, and are expecting great leadership from their experience. New coach Esteban Alvarez, from the soccer crazed country of Uruguay, is excited about the addition of 10 new players to the team this year. This includes the return of All Conference player Matt Conley. THE game of the season will be September 18th, against cross town rival Central Bible College. BBC won last years game in overtime 2 to 1. Fans can expect to see quality soccer at all of our games, with an emphasis on sportsmanship and Christian character.
The roster this year includes Mike Brown, Josh Burkhart, Greg Bush, Kris Bush, Matt Conely, Tim Dimakos, Greg Goodin, Trent Goodin, Daniel Johnson, Tyler Kelso, Bradley Kepler, Winston Kumar, Austin London, Garret Pierce, Jon Solomon and Josh Stoddart, with players from eight states as well as Senegal and Greece. And I can confirm that a win is still a valued commodity in this league as evidenced by the competitiveness of play. I’ll be out for the local derby against CBC on September 18th.
