Home Game of the weekend – St Louis University visits on Sunday to play the Missouri State Bears at 4:00 pm. This is a great grudge match between the women’s teams and SLU has played a brutal early season schedule that includes Southern Methodist (will Afton play?) on Friday. Add this one to your calendar!
Now, a shout out to a pair of local players who earned player of the week honors in their respective conferences this past weekend before delving into the rest of the regional games available to you this weekend:
Freshman Jordan Reppell of the Missouri State Bears earned Brine/MVC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Reppells’ defensive efforts helped Missouri State record two shutout victories allowing the opponents only a combined total of 11 shots, seven on goal. Offensively she recorded one shot on goal against in-state squad Southeast Missouri State. Teammate Lauren Heck also received consideration.
The Lady Bears are in Lincoln Nebraska to take on the Huskers Friday. Nebraska tied MVC opponent Drake 1-1 yesterday. Drake was chosen #2 in the MVC Preseason poll, ahead of MSU at #4, so this will be a good measure of the Bears capabilities.
Junior transfer Marco Cherisma of the Drury Panthers is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. The junior forward guided the Panthers to a pair of wins last week by posting seven goals.
The Panthers are on the road this weekend, opening their GLVC schedule with games Friday at Rolla and on Sunday at UMSL.
At Plaster Stadium, the Missouri State Bears are hosting their Comfort Inn/Diadora Tournament this weekend. On Friday, Drake will face Western Illinois at 5 p.m. followed by the Bears’ 7 p.m. contest against Central Arkansas. Saturday’s matchups will pit Drake against Central Arkansas at 5 p.m., followed by the Bears hosting Western Illinois at 7 p.m.
At Hal Boden Field (Joplin), the Missouri Southern Lions open conference play with games on Friday and Sunday. 7:00 pm Friday it’s Eastern New Mexico visiting while at 1:00 pm Sunday its West Texas A&M.
The Southwest Baptist University Men’s Club team, now in the same bracket with Mizzou, opens their home season with a game against Wichita State on Saturday. Last I heard the men are playing their games at Lake Country Soccer so consider heading out for that game.
And set your DVR’s for 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoon (since you’ll be at MSU vs SLU) so you can tape the US Men’s team game against Brazil. The game is being played in Chicago at Soldier Field and it sounds like Brazil will have a solid contingent of their foreign-based players.
