Webb City Cardinals Win Willard Tournament

Webb City Cardinals vs Monett Cubs at Willard TourneyUpdated - The Webb City Cardinals went 3-0 this weekend, outscoring their opponents 8-1, to win the Willard Tournament. They opened the weekend Friday evening with a difficult 2-0 win over the Bolivar Liberators. The game winner came from a corner kick, headed in by TJ Martin in the 36th minute. Justin Boudreaux earned the clean sheet for the Cardinals.

On Saturday, the Cardinals got their second win of the weekend over a District opponent when they got by the Monett Cubs 5-1. That took them into the Championship game against the New Covenant Academy Warriors, a Class 1 team that had gotten by Willard and Hillcrest to reach the final.

The final, played immediately after NCA’s win against Hillcrest, was a 2-0 shut out for the championship. This early season challenge is something the Warriors will be able to call upon as they defend their Class 1 District title while for the Cardinal’s, it bodes well going into the heart of the season. The Class 2 games in the region could be the most competitive we see this season with West Plains, Willard, Webb City and Bolivar all having the tools to challenge. I haven’t seen Cassville yet but they and Carthage both have history behind them and add to the competitive level we can expect.

As much I hate to take away a shutout from my own team, it’s not the same if it didn’t really happen.
