The Drury Panther’s had a pair of games this weekend. I’m happy to have a guest correspondent providing coverage, Donny Bordelon, who’s son Andrew is a sophomore starter at midfield.
The Drury Panthers hosted Oakland City in their home opener Saturday night with an impressive 5-0 victory and moved to 3-0-0 for the season. Marco Cherisma (shown in practice earlier this year) opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season in the 24th minute off a Nick Washam assist. Cherisma would add his second goal of the game and fifth of the season in the 28th minute on a penalty kick after being dragged down in the box by Oakland City keeper Price Bishop. The first half ended with Drury enjoying a 2-0 lead.
The lead quickly turned to 3 goals in the 49th minute when Steve Wilczewski slotted home a pass from Cherisma. Freshman Adam Peterson added to the scoring when he notched his first career goal in the 60th minute off an assist from fellow freshman Joe Huppe. The fifth and final goal came in the 89th minute when Jake Allison found the back of the net on an assist from Andrew Bordelon. Connor McCellan narrowly missed adding a sixth goal off a header from Allison in the final minute of the contest.
The Panthers controlled the game from the opening whistle and out shot the Mighty Oaks by a 15 to 2 margin. Logan Hoffman went the distance in goal for the third consecutive game and completed his first career shutout.
In Sunday’s action, Drury shut out Upper Iowa by the score of 5-0 with Cherisma netting all five, setting a new scoring record for Drury.
