New Covenant Wins Willard Tournament Opener

New Covenant Academy Warriors at Willard Tigers The New Covenant Academy Warriors got past the host Willard Tigers tonight in the opener of the Willard Tournament. The only goal of the match was scored by freshman stopper Tanner Stever when he buried a ball that was knocked down in front of him by teammate Stephen Jones, following a corner kick. Stever’s shot found the space between the GK and the defender on the far post to earn the 1-0 win for the Warriors.

The goal was scored in the 34th minute and came directly after the Tiger’s missed taking the lead themselves when Justin Thompson put his direct kick off of the crossbar. The senior captain created the opportunity when he alertly put the ball down following a whistle and got his shot off from the restart before the Warrior’s could set up. The Warriors were able to clear the ball and the corner kick came as a result of excellent hustle by junior Jed Holloway who forced the play in the Tigers defensive end.

In the second half, the Tigers pressed forward and put the Warriors under significant pressure but this hard working team was unable to get the goal they needed. They’ll get plenty of opportunities to practice their offense this weekend as they host their annual tournament that includes three District opponents in the Black Pool.

The Hillcrest Hornets, New Covenant Warriors and Willard Tigers make up the White Pool while the Bolivar Liberators, Monett Cubs and Webb City Cardinals make up the Black Pool.
