Practice has begun for our favorite D1 program here in Springfield, with both the men’s and women’s programs beginning their season. The photo is of Ryan Hennessy (KC North and 2 time state champion KC Pace) following the 2 mile fitness run that kicked off the season for the men at midnight last night. Ryan earned the starting left back spot last year as a freshman and finished second in the run last night behind incoming transfer Brent Madawick. Update - did I mention that 90% of the young men finished in under 12 minutes?
The Lady Bears were out scrimmaging when I drove by last night at 7pm so I was able to get an early peek at them as well. They open the season with an exhibition match this Saturday at Plaster. Game time is 7:00 pm and the opponent is the University of Central Missouri Jennie’s (formerly Central Missouri State), who participated in the NCAA Division 2 playoffs for the first time last year. It also marks the return of Erin Hainey (Kickapoo 2004) as a senior.
The Men open their season with an exhibition match against Division II Rockhurst (out of KC) next Wednesday, August 22nd. 6:00 pm at Plaster Stadium. Rockhurst is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and we’ll see them again September 26th when they visit Drury for a Conference game. The regular season opens Saturday September 1st with a home game against Centenary College, 7:00 pm at Plaster.
