Show Me State Games

As the boys season prepares to begin the Fall season on Monday, Bolivar and Lebanon used the summer practice window to do something a bit different. Rather then attend a camp like the Missouri State Team Camp, or get together in their own backyard for training, they instead signed up for and competed in the Show-Me State Games.

From the Bolivar Liberator’s website - The Liberators played well and opened some eyes this weekend at the Show Me State Games, losing only to last years U18 winners Hazelwood. The score was 2-1. Bolivar opened up the scoring in the 12th minute and held the lead until fatigue set in and allowed Hazelwood to score two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. The following is the summary of the pool:

Bolivar beat Ashland 3-0 in pool play, with Ryan Toombs, Toad Slagle and Matt Magana scoring. They also beat Cuba 7-0 to finish with 14 points, just behind Hazelwood’s 18 and far ahead of Ashland and Cuba.

Here’s what Coach Mike Gow had to say about the weekend:

I was really impressed with how are team competed this weekend. We had last years Show-Me champions down for most of the game untill fatique and lack of focus set in and we gave up two late goals. The guys came out the next two games and were even more determined, as indicated by our results. We moved the ball extremely well and recieved a lot of praise and compliments from our opponents and officials on our team play. We learned a lot about our team and their strenghts and weaknesses. It was a great weekend for us.

Turns out Mike took the girls team as well, both competed in the U17/18 Open division.

Our boys struggled a bit in the first game, Friday night, losing to a Blue Springs team 0-5. The next morning at 8am they played a team from Chillicothe and won that game 4-2. At 6:30 they played a team from Marshall and lost that game 1-0. Saturday morning at 9:30 they played a team from St. Joseph and came from 1 down to win 2-1. We had 13 guys there for 4 games and I felt each time they took the field they became a better team. The boys finished 3rd in their group of 5 teams.

Our girls team finished 3-0-1 allowing 3 goals in 4 games.
The girls played St. Joseph in their first game Saturday at 2pm and won that game 6-0. They played next faced Mexico at 6:30 and came from 2 down in the first to end the game tied at 2. Sunday morning at 8 am they played a team from Overland and won that game 4-0. Putting them in what ended up being the Gold Medal game with Jeff City. Jeff City took an early 1-0 lead but the girls came back and tied it at 1 just before the break. The girls worked hard in the second half and put a nice combo together to go up 2-1 with about 8 minutes remaining. This game was by far the best game of the weekend as to how the teams played the game. It was a good match.
