The St Louis Lions earned three points, putting them at 24 from 13 games and first place in the Heartland Division, by defeating the Sioux Fall Spitfire 2-1 yesterday evening. In front of a large crowd out to honor the new St Louis Soccer Hall of Fame inductees for 2007, the always reliable Tommy Heinemann got the game winner in the 75th minute when he combined with Crowley to break free of the defense. His run into the box coincided with the flight of the ball, where he settled with his chest and sent a low ball into the right corner beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
The KC Brass are in second place, only a point behind the Lions and with four games in hand (only nine played). They will make up that difference this week, with a pair of home games against Thunder Bay on Tuesday and Wednesday and then they begin a stretch of five straight away games with a trip to Des Moines and Sioux Fall this weekend. Thunder Bay is in the mix as well, with 22 points from 10 games. They will face Sioux Falls and Des Moines twice, all at home, between now and July 21st.
In the games between KC & Thunder Bay on Tuesday and Wednesday see one team take 4 or more points (a win and a tie) a Division leader will truly be identified. A split favors Thunder Bay with their home schedule and the results they’ve achieved against their opponents already. St Louis has an outside chance of maintaining their position if they can win their final three, including a home game against the Springfield Demize on July 21st.
