The Missouri High School girls soccer tournament has crowned their District champions who now move onto the Sectional round (Final 16). Locally there are three teams still playing.
The Class 2 Sectional will feature the Kickapoo Chiefs vs the Rolla Bulldogs. The game will be played Tuesday May 22nd at 6:30 pm here in Springfield, at the Cooper Soccer Complex. The ladies met once before this year, on April 5th very early in the season. Kickapoo beat Waynesville on Tuesday April 3rd and then went to Rolla and won 2-1 in OT on Chealsey Russell’s long shot. Given that history, Rolla’s loss in Districts last year to the upstart Falcon’s and the Chief’s desire to send Coach Davidson off in style, there is no shortage of story lines to consider. I’ll be there on Tuesday to try and do it justice.
In Class 1, Springfield Catholic travels to Waynesville on Tuesday to take on the St James Tigers. Game time is 6:00 pm. Not much I can tell you about the Tigers, even Dave Robert’s seems to have had a difficult time getting a handle on this wine outpost near Rolla. Good luck to the Irish!
Winners of these games will have a Quarterfinal match this Saturday. Class 1 has been moved to Columbia Hickman at 11:00 am (Jeff City faced flooding) and Class 2 is being played in Rolla on the new pitch at UMR. 2:00 pm start time there. I hope to make both games. To heck with gas prices!
Oh, and come back late this afternoon. I’ll be posting the Girls Team for the upcoming Southwest All-Stars game that is being played June 21st at the Cooper Soccer Complex.
On the International front, you want to set your recorders if you are unable to get away for a late lunch Tuesday. The European Champions League final is Tuesday Wednesday and is being broadcast live on ESPN2. Pregame starts at 1:00 pm, game time is 1:30 pm. I think I’m going to catch it on the outdoor patio at Big Whiskey’s (weather permitting), come join me.
Thursday evening the Springfield Demize return to town. They host the St Louis Lions, coached by Tony Glavin and assisted by Terry Michler (CBC HS, featured on this site recently) and should be the homecoming of former Drury player Chris Anazalone (pictured with Glavin). Chris has chosen to transfer to SIU-Edwardsville after leading the Panthers in scoring his freshman year. That should liven things up on the pitch. The Demize are 1-1 in Open Cup qualifying now and will face the KC Brass in KC on Saturday. It will be an important three day period for them.
