Springfield Catholic – 3
Willard Tigers – 1
Very enjoyable match this evening as both teams came to play albeit with somewhat different goals. The Irish got on the board first, via a familiar route. Elle Holtman’s corner kick in the 27th minute fell to Tara Bailes at the far side of the box and her shot bounced once and skipped past the keeper. Willard stormed back to tie the game 1-1 when Patsy Middleton got to a ball in the six yard box and helped it into the net past the keeper.
It remained knotted at 1-1 until the 46th minute when Tara Baile’s 30 yard direct kick was knocked down and wide by the Tigers goalkeeper. As the defenders concentrated on senior captain Elle Holtman’s run into the box in anticipation of the rebound, senior Sarah Martin was essentially unmarked at the far post and she confidently tapped the ball into the net for the eventual game winner.
The Irish got the 3rd, and final goal in the 51st minute. The Tigers reach their first District Final match and match the Irish in heart and hustle. The next step, as described by junior Janine Bird – play to the feet. That’s what the summer and fall will be for. Congratulations ladies!
The Fightin’ Irish will travel to Waynesville on Tuesday for the Sectional game. Their opponent will be … St. James who finished 10-5-3 in winning District 11.
