Things come to a head quickly this week. Already Class 1 District 12 has gone from 8 teams to 4 remaining. They’ll play their semifinals this evening and the final will be Wednesday. The prohibitive favorite is Springfield Catholic, arguably the best team regardless of class, in the region. They’ll face Joplin McAuley tonight while Willard and Greenwood battle for the opportunity to play for a District title.
The Class 2 teams will begin play this evening, with Kickapoo hosting District 12. The Chiefs are seeded #1 and will play on Tuesday against the winner of the Joplin Eagles vs Parkview Vikings game. Kickapoo is the only team in the area that can say they beat the Ozark Conference Co-Champions Glendale and Waynesville but one of their three Conference losses came to Joplin. I think they call that parity in the NFL.
District 11 features 4 of the top 5 finishers in the Ozark Conference this year, with Glendale, Waynesville, Rolla and Lebanon ranked 1-4 in the District seeding that occurred last week. The Rolla Bulldogs are hosting on their new pitch which is receiving rave reviews. They’ll face Central tonight while Lebanon takes on Hillcrest with the winners moving on to face Waynesville and Glendale respectively. That should lead to a rematch for Glendale with Lebanon. You may recall the Yellowjackets surprised the Falcons 1-0 earlier this month.
So there don’t seem to be any guarantees this year. Tough for the teams, great for the fans as everyone comes out with the idea that they can win. Semfinals are Tuesday, Finals will be played Thursday evening weather permitting. Specifics can be found on the Calendar page.
By the way, our neighbors in Central Missouri District 10 played on Saturday as well. The Camdenton Lakers lost 2-1 to hosts Columbia Rock Bridge while Columbia Hickman got by Smith-Cotton 1-0. The semifinals tonight feature #1 Jeff City vs Hickman and Rock Bridge against #2 Helias.
There will be some additional good soccer available via the boob tube. English Premier League Fans are looking forward to the FA Cup game on Saturday. It’s Chelsea vs Manchester United and there are some that say unless Chelsea wins, Mourinho will be fired after losing the EPL title to ManU and being knocked out of the Champions League.
The KC Wizards travel to Denver to take on the Colorado Rapids. Game time Saturday is 8pm, on Direct Kick.
