This Week In Springfield Soccer

One word - RAIN! It looks like it will be a day-to-day affair of determining whether the start of the regular season in HS Girls soccer here in Missouri will actually include any games being played. I will post any game changes on this site for any team that wants to get the word out. Use the Contact Form to let me - and your teams fans - know.

I’ll be back after lunch with an overview of what to look for this week!

It’s 1:30 pm and it doesn’t look too bad for tonights local games. I’m betting Bolivar will be less lucky then Springfield when it comes to getting the games in.

The game I’m attending this evening is Glendale vs Catholic, in a showdown between regional Class 2 and Class 1 powerhouses respectively to open the season. Glendale will feature junior Lou Opfer, Rolla’s nemesis in last year’s District 11 playoff, and freshman Katie Brewer pulling the strings in the midfield along with one of the top 3 goalkeepers in the area in senior Megan Laura McElroy (headed for Grinnell College in IA). Catholic will counter with what could be the top midfield combo in the region, regardless of Class - junior Tara Bailes and senior Elle Holtman (headed for Rockhurst University I just heard). Also blessed with a top 3 goalkeeper in senior Christina Ogden (Central Methodist), the Irish also will have the advantage of having Anna Delong and Alicia Tonjuk up top. Anna, a sophomore, is explosive and tenacious, one of the most exciting forwards in the area while senior Tonjuk, coming off her performance as a leading scorer for the Irish’s State Finalist basketball squad, is capable of making an impact wherever Coach Timson puts her on the pitch.

Tuesday I plan to drive to Rolla to take in the home opener on their brand new pitch, installed next to the Football field at the High School. Teams may dread playing Mike Howard’s always competitive squads but now the facilities will match the teams performance. Coach Chris Welch is taking her varsity squad to Rolla to christen the field.

Thursday will be a double-header for me. First the Ozark Tigers host the Wisconsin Rapids HS team that will be in town to do some warm weather training prior to the game that will begin at 4:00 pm. Glendale Falcons vs Bentonville Tigers - Kickapoo ShootoutThe teams will enjoy a BBQ following the game, more details on the brand new OzarkTigersoccer.com website (update your links folks!). I’ll head North to Kickapoo Chiefs as they host visit the defending 3 time State Champion Rogers (AR) squad. The game will be on the heels of their opening match Tuesday against Bentonville (AR), a team that includes senior forward Kelly O’Conner (pictured scoring at the 2006 Shootout), committed to the University of Arkansas squad, that opened a lot of eyes during their visit for last years Kickapoo Shootout. Update - the game is in Rogers dang nab it!

The Glendale goalkeeper’s name is Laura McElroy, not Megan, who is her older sister. Also,I believe Alicia is not able to play because she does not have enough practice days in because of the Irish’s advance in basketball. I am not sure on that rule but you could check. It’s going to be a great game.
