Sportswriter Dave Roberts provides an excellent overview of the preseason favorites with this article from Tuesday:
The Lady Tigers return 16 varsity lettermen, including all 11 starters, from last season’s banner squad. ‘The girls seem to have bought in to what I’m trying to do,” said Scott, who also took over as the WHS boys’ soccer head coach this school year. “We’ve been focused. And this week is the first week we’ve had everybody back.”
What Scott is trying to do is improve the Lady Tigers’ defense. Scott saw Waynesville from the opposite sideline last season, as he was formerly an assistant coach at Rolla. And what he saw was a WHS squad that, against the top competition on its schedule, gave up 24 goals in five games last spring.
Coach Josh Scott begins his first season with the Lady Tigers, after his inaugural season with the boys last Fall. The team is in Bolivar this evening, taking on the Lady Liberators at 5:30 pm. The first opportunity we’ll have to see this years edition is March 27th when they visit Ozark. The first real test, one of those six teams that Scott references in the article, comes April 3rd when Waynesville visits Kickapoo. I’ve added it to my calendar! And remember how well the Waynesville basketball team did?
“I think what (WHS girls’ basketball head coach Butch O’Riley) and those girls did was huge for our program,” Scott said. “Winning is contagious. And Katie, Tash and Orielle know what it takes to win a district (also soccer players). They stepped up when everything is on the line.”
