Springfield Catholic Advances

Springfield Catholic's Alicia Tonjuk Congratulations to Springfield Catholic, and senior Alicia Tonjuk (pictured at left, photo by Amber Arnold, Springfield News-Leader) as they advance to the State Quarterfinals for Class 3 girls. They play Saturday at 7:45 pm at Missouri State University for the right to advance to the Final Four in Columbia. Springfield Catholic (19-10) will face Fatima (15-13).

From the News-Leader story on the Sectional games last night at Kickapoo:

Catholic senior Alicia Tonjuk was 5 for 5 from 3-point range in the first half as the Lady Irish closed the half on 27-10 run.

Tonjuk said the Lady Irish remained calm during the opening stretch.

“We just didn’t panic,” she said. “We calmed down and got refocused and remembered what it was that got us here.”

The Fightin’ Irish are taking advantage of a three day Spring Break right now. Stay rested and focused ladies. And here’s hoping we don’t see Alicia on the pitch for another ten days!

I am certainly one of the Lady Irish basketball team’s biggest fans and I would like nothing more than to see them advance to the final four in Columbia. Your last comment however, Ole, about not seeing Alicia on the pitch for the next 10 days struck very close to home as I realize that the BB team’s good fortune will be our soccer team’s misfortune as we will have to step on the pitch against Glendale with Alicia not having participated in a single practice session.

Still, I hope she buries 5 more three-pointers against Fatima on Saturday night!

You’re talking about a senior with ice in her veins Ben. Alicia will be ready. Will her teammates?
