This is a post I’ve been meaning to write for two months now. I’ve been through a dozen PDA’s in the past decade and my most recent mobile device of choice has been the Palm Tungsten T2 that I can whip out and show my photos, even my soccer videos, in wonderful 320×320 color quality.
If you would like to have a portable version of this site and you are using any of the following devices – Palm (OS Version 4 or 5), Windows Mobile Pocket PC (CE version 3.0 or later), Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003 or above, RIM BlackBerry Devices with RIM browser 3.7+, or Symbian OS running on Nokia or Sony-Ericsson phones – then you too can carry this sites content with you. In full color if you choose.
The key to the process is a wonderful software application called AvantGo. This application is free and in addition to allowing you to read my site, you can also choose from hundreds of other subscriptions from weather, national publications, ESPN, etc.
Go to the website at www.avantgo.com and register for a free account. Find your PDA device and download the software for your device. After you synch it the first time, under the settings category choose “Create Personal Channel” where you simply enter the address for this site (http://SGFsoccer.com), check the boxes that include downloading images as well as following links if you have wireless support on your device and want to follow the links.
That’s it, it’s remarkably simple, enough that it’s my Dad’s new prefered choice for reading my site (and showing it to his friends 🙂 ).
I owe Russ White, a regular reader and soccer Dad of a Springfield SC youth player, both a hat tip and an apology for this post. The hat tip is for pointing me to the fact that he is reading my website on his PDA and an apology for not writing up his suggestions for how he accomplished that during the Fall season. So thank you Russ ( of RussnDDWhite ) for your great idea and your patience!
PS – I haven’t sorted out how to read comments or the pages on my site despite experimenting with several settings. I’m going to review Russ’ suggestions when I get back to town but if anyone else tries this and is successful with this piece, please let me know.
