The final is set with the ACC getting shut out literally and figuratively in Saturday’s semifinal matches. While I was sitting in a 2 1/2 hour back up on I-44, UCLA broke through in the second half with four goals to swamp the Virginia squad. Wake Forest appeared to be the better side in the second game but were unable to finish, the closest opportunity coming in the 80th minute when they knocked one off the crossbar. They lost in PK’s following a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods. Too much caution.
Despite the conditions, St. Louis was out in force for the games today. That’s Ty Keough, former US National team midfielder, TV announcer and Washington University coach who was out with his father, Hall of Famer Harry Keough. There are innumerable other familiar faces who can be seen as well by clicking on the photo. That includes local favorites Tom Marlow, Danny Collins and Jared Dusha. Dusha had his UCSB jersey on, having attended the UCSB Soccer Camps this summer while exploring his college opportunities. That didn’t include the SAT (or was it ACT?) test he missed due to the traffic jams on I-44 this morning. Good thing his buddies Danny & Tom were around to rescue him and drag him off to the games today!
My weekend got easier (following the traffic nightmare) but much less interesting when I found out the Final Four Showcase tournament has been canceled. We’ll have to wait for Devon Newport and the Springfield SC U16 squad to Represent Springfield Soccer!

[...] I took two primary steps. The first was to title the three stories I wrote with “College Cup” in the title. On Monday November 27th I wrote a short article highlighting the upcoming games. On Friday December 1st, I wrote a brief article noting that the games had been postponed due to the weather. Both of these used “College Cup” in the title of the article as well as in the body. Then on Saturday and Monday, for the two days of games, I used “College Cup Photos” in the title while including the name of the teams involved as well, anticipating searches such as “College Cup photos UCLA”.
