The Lafayette Lancers shut out the Vianney Golden Griffins this evening by the score of 2-0 in the first semifinal game. The Lancers continue their strong late season run, running Coach Tim Walters system in a way that might yet put a smile on his face. Goals came from junior Harrison Grubbs, knocking in a rebound of a shot by Sean Butler. Butler sealed the victory when he got to a wonderfully placed free kick that found him at the back post.
The Red Devils were up 4-1 on the Rockhurst Hawks in the second semifinal when I left with under ten minutes to play. The first goal was scored by All-American Mike Roach, who placed his header just inside the right upright when he redirected a cross midway through the first half. Kevin Stoll scored very early in the second half on a shot inside the six yard box before Rockhurst got one back from junior Justin Koehler, the sweeper and a team captain. His goal came on a header off a corner kick.
Chaminade sealed the victory in the 69th minute when All-Midwest player, Pat Clendenny, got way up on a corner kick and put his header into the lower left corner. I’ll post a photo of his goal when I get back to Springfield Saturday night along with my other shots. Update – pictured! Kevin Stoll got a second goal a few minutes later as I was making my way to my car (it was darn cold after four hours in that valley).
I’ll have more from the Final on Saturday. I also hope to feature a new writer this weekend who will offer his views of the matches as well. ABC has Bruce Arena, Springfield Soccer will have…
