I missed this on Sunday with my travel and business schedule but there was some fine news coming out of Normal IL. The women got the job done against Illinois State, winning 1-0 against the Redbirds and moving into the Missouri Valley Conference semifinals while avenging their 2-1 loss in the final conference match to the Redbirds only a week earlier.
The Bears got on the scoreboard in the 11th minute on Kate Blair’s goal, assisted by Samantha Aguilar. Jackie Jasper earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for her efforts in the game as well, as the Redbirds outshot the Bears 25-6. Jasper stopped all 14 shots on goal in earning the shutout.
From the Bears website, where there are more details on both games and Jasper’s award:
The Bears advance to the conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003. The last two seasons, Missouri State has failed to advance as they came up short on penalty kicks to Illinois State in 2004 and Evansville in 2005. Missouri State is 11-7-3 in MVC Tournament matches and took home the conference championship in 2000. The Bears have advanced to the semifinals eight out of their 11 years of existence and to the championship match twice.
The Missouri State women’s soccer team will compete against Drake in Omaha, Neb., on Friday, Nov. 3, in the MVC semifinals. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The championship match, if the Bears should advance, is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 5 at 3:05 p.m. The game will air live on ESPNU.
The NCAA Division I men’s and women’s tournament fields will be announced on Monday, Nov. 6. The women’s selections will be announced on ESPNEWS’s 3-4 p.m. ET news slot.
