In another local derby, played last Thursday in much warmer weather, the Hillcrest Hornets came from behind to defeat the Central Bulldogs by the score of 3-1. The Bulldogs scored early to take a 1-0 lead that they took to the halftime break. Coach Andrew Clifton’s adjustments saw the Hornets come out much stronger in the second, including Bryce Collier’s early effort that went off the upright in the 44th minute. It took a bad break on miscommunication between the defense and keeper in the 63rd minute before Hillcrest was able to score and tie the game. In the 69th Collier’s simple chip over the defense allowed German foreign exchange student Axel (pictured above earlier in the game) to break down the middle and draw the defense to him. His simple square ball across the front of the six yard box was confidently buried by Ben Ballhorn for the game winner.
Central pushed forward hard in an attempt to equalize and earned a PK on a handball in the box, off of a corner kick in the 77th minute. Goalkeeper Mitchell Boyles pushed the shot wide to maintain the lead for the Hornets. The final margin, 3-1, came from a stoppage time goal by Collier as the Bulldogs were caught up trying to equalize.
