This Week In Soccer

Time flies! It’s the final week of the regular season of boys soccer this week and that means two things. The second meeting between Kickapoo and Glendale on Tuesday evening as well as the final scramble for District seeding position for the Class 3 squads.

The seeding is complete for Class 1 and Class 2 and games begin Friday evening when Marshfield and Monett face off for the right to take on #1 West Plains on Saturday at Willard. That same day Greenwood hosts the start of the Class 1 games where they are the #1 seed and the recharged New Covenant Warriors are #2.

As noted, the second match up between Glendale and Kickapoo is set for tomorrow (Tuesday) at Cooper #1. Since the first match up, the Chiefs are 9-0, outscoring their opponents 45-6 during that streak including five shutouts. They won their tournament as well as taking down Hickman and Helias on their visit here a week ago. THe Falcons are 4-4 in the same period including losses to Rolla (0-1) and Hickman (2-3, giving up all three goals in the final 10 minutes). With Ozark Conference games this week against Kickapoo and Parkview, the Falcons could face a third place finish in the Conference. They will also be facing a resurgent Rolla Bulldog squad in District 11 that will certainly remember the Falcons role in knocking out their highly-ranked girls squad last Spring. Don’t you love October!

The Drury Panthers finish their season tomorrow night, heading to Joplin to take on Missouri Southern in a non-conference match that matters only to the two teams involved. The women closed their season last week with a 1-0 win over the Southwest Baptist women.

For D1 Missouri State, the women’s 2-1 loss to Illinois State on Sunday moved them to 2-3-1 in the MVC for the season, probably eliminating the chance of a final home match during the Conference play-in games. They head to Oklahoma for a non-conference game on Thursday.

The men fared no better this weekend, losing 3-1 to Drake on Saturday night. The loss moves them to third in the Conference and if Drake can beat Eastern Illinois on Saturday, they will move into third while knocking the Bears down to fourth place. Creighton visits Peoria to face Bradley on Saturday in a battle to determine the regular season Conference champion. Bradley will also host the MVC Tournament beginning Wednesday November 1st.

Creighton has moved to #15 in the national-rankings, ahead of SLU who are #19, and are assured of an NCAA invite. For the Missouri Valley to get a second participant may require an upset in the tournament.
