The ladies took the field this weekend, defying the rain and the cold to battle for bragging rights in anticipation of the upcoming spring Girls season. I took in three games on Sunday, including the U14 girls final that was a Springfield derby, featuring the Springfield SC and JB Marine. It was a tightly fought affair with both goalkeepers stepping up to keep out what seemed to be sure goals during the course of the match. JB Marine scored first, early in the second half on a blast by Jordan. Emily Cline tied the game late in the half (pictured) and SSC came out and got an early breakaway in the second half that held up as the game winner.
JB Marine beat the Hot Shots in one of the U14 semifinals as this squad of local players made it through to the final four in their first tournament ever. Springfield SC defeated Legacy, out of KC in their semifinal. Click on the photo to be taken to the photo page where you’ll find more pictures from each game. In addition, there are some photos of the Springfield SC U19 girls in their semifinal loss to Topeka (an OT heartbreaker) as well as the U15 champion Carrera Varvaro squad who are now at 21-2 on the season. Congrats!
Update - I caught up with Coach Brian Russell and got the following on his Mamba’s U16 girls team that made it to the semifinals.
We made it to the semi-finals and went 2 over time periods and lost in p.k.’s in this weekends tournament. This was the most emotion that this girls have ever experienced in club soccer as they have never made it to the semi’s with any of their teams over the past several years. They were excited to win and make the semi’s,, they were scared to take the p.k.’s, they were excited when they went up on the the p.k.’s and then crushed when they missed the final 2 to lose. They got a taste of what it’s like to be this far and we hope to build on that experience.
The Mamba U16 girls team consists of 7 girls from last years U16 squad to create an age appropriate new U16 team this year and to try again. This was a great move as they have not lost a game in regulation in now 2 fall tournaments this year
