OK, so I know you expect me to write about the game, and it was a fine game of soccer tonight. The first thing I want to do though is send a shout out to the Springfield Soccer community. You folks came through BIG TIME tonight. 2102 is the attendance, there are parties going on in the stands, the student cheer section outdid themselves (look for a video interview by some senior journalism students to hit this space in a week or two) and skyboxes! Thanks Mr Cooper, and to the Springfield SC, for providing me with an enjoyable respite during halftime. A new record for attendance at a soccer game in Springfield, confirmed by Associate AD Bill O’Neil.
I was itching to get back down to the field however and the men made me look prescient tonight.
1-1, the Missouri State Bears come back and tie the Creighton Blue Jays with a goal by Justin Douglass in the 88th minute.
Omar Shoucair draws the foul on the right side, senior midfield general Kyle Hopson sets up the free kick and delivers it to the penalty spot. Junior captain, and defensive stalwart, Justin Douglass rises high while Justin Alford is being crunched from both sides by Chris Schuler and Pietari Holopainen . The header is driven to the lower left corner past a diving keeper. Yes!

It was a fine game indeed. I would like to add one additional note about the “student cheer section.” We are not just students. We are a group called the Grizzlies. We love MoState Soccer. We’re crazy fans who feel that the soccer atmosphere should be noisy and teams that come into our stadium should know they are in Springfield (and despair). Thanks for covering the game.

Dang Wesley, I’m proud to know the Grizzlies are visiting my simple site. I love the Grizzlies and you are right, you are more then a student cheer section. Will I see you at the women’s match Friday?
Okay. I left the stadium with fewer than five minutes to go so I could beat the traffic and get some things done before going to bed. Of course, as I am exiting the Grand underpass, I hear a roar from the stadium, so I turned around and went back to watch through the gate on the east side of the stadium. Ole spotted me and left me a voice mail chastising me for standing outside.
The upside to standing there was that I had a great view of Welch’s clearance in the second overtime since I was look down the goal line.
The Grizzlies were awesome. I was impressed that they were able to get up the drumming throughout the match. They definitely made the atmosphere more festive.
I liked that for a few moments my wife and I thought Nick had scored the Bear’s goal. We were only minimally disappointed to find out it was JD instead.
I’ve gotta chime in, the crowed was great. Not only were the Grizzlies loud and obnoxious, but the amount of fans was fantastic. Solid pictures by the way Ole. What a great late goal by MSU!
